3-2 with Caltech

Anyone know how competitive this program is and whether or not one can double major while at Haverford and in the program?

Thanks!

It would be close to impossible to double major and still do this program. Although the requirements listed on the Caltech website seem doable (2 years math, 2 years physics and 1 year chemistry), fulfilling the requirements for a 2nd major in 3 years would be very hard because you’d need to take 5 classes some semesters, some with lab requirements as well. You can minor though…

Regarding how competitive the 3/2 is, you should probably ask Dr. Walter Smith who is the contact person for this program. I don’t think you’d be “competing” with other HC students but rather all potential applicants from all the feeder schools into this program. I Google searched “Haverford Caltech 3/2” and it seems the most recent alumnus to do this program is HC’07. BTW, it looks like he won Caltech’s mechanical engineering prize on graduation.

There are other paths that can lead to engineering from HC. There’s the new Penn 4+1 program that leads to an MS. Also, one of my classmates graduated as a physics major and then went to MIT for an MS in mechanical engineering right after college so I know you don’t need to have an engineering degree to get into the best engineering programs. Also, if you ever get the chance to speak with Board member Professor Catherine Koshland, you can ask her how she graduated with a BA in fine arts and then wound up at Stanford first for an MS and then a PhD in mechanical engineering.

Thank you so much, HC Alum! A great answer as always.
