Hi guys, are my chances fairly low to transfer to UT - COLA?

Thank You!

I’ve seen some get in with a 3.1, but those are rare cases.

You can always apply and hope for the best, but you’ll have a much better chance with a 3.3+.

I would be really uncomfortable and doubtful applying with a 3.25, but your grades show a very drastic improvement over the course of those three semesters, so I would imagine they would take that into consideration when looking at your grades, potentially giving you a better shot than if your GPA was around a 3.25 your first semester and just stayed that way. Were there extenuating circumstances that led to the lower GPA in the beginning? If so, and you detailed those in your essay, they would probably consider that heavily as well; it’s not QUITE all about GPA.

That being said, when it’s not all about your GPA, then the next most considered factor is your resume. If you don’t get in this go-around, try to beef it up more if you apply again in the future.

Edit: this goes without saying, but keep your grades up as well.

Transferhorn,

I went through a very tough time transitioning from high school to college. I believe that is why my first year suffered. However, I drastically changed my study habits and worked hard to get a 4.0 GPA my first semester of my sophomore year.

The thing is, if I apply to UT - Austin for Fall 13, I will have a 3.25 GPA. But if I wait a semester, I can potentially get a 3.45 GPA. But that means, I will have to apply for Spring 14’ (second semester of my Junior Year).

UT is my dream school, but if I don’t get into UT by the first semester of my junior year, should I even consider applying for my second semester of my junior year? Would that be too late?

It is too late to apply for Fall 2013, the applications were due March. Spring applications will be due in October. If you want to attend UT, you will have to submit your application with your current GPA. As it stands, the average transfer GPA is 3.5 for COLA, which means you may have to wait till your a junior to apply to UT. If you manage to give your GPA a significant boost, the earliest you could apply (and have a competitive chance of being accepted) is for summer 2014.

With all that said, I think you might be better off staying at UofH. You will probably be set back by a year if you transfer as a junior to UT. This is a huge financial set back (unless you have a nice financial aid package). Just make good grades and study hard. You could always apply to UT for graduate school.
