3.4 GPA- Did I waste my time and money by applying?

Ok, this won't be such a great manifesto, but here goes:

Intended major: Economics

If it matters at all i'm an Indonesian-American.

GPA: 3.42 UW. School doesn't weight, but if I had to estimate my weighted GPA it would probably be around the 3.7-3.8 weighted range.
SAT: 1600/2350 (single sitting)
SAT IIs- World History: 800, Math 2: 710
AP: Psych, Art History, English Lang and Comp, Comp Sci, World History, US History- All 5s, (self studied Psych and World History)

I worked hard on my personal statements, my AP English Lang teacher liked it, as did my AP English Lit teacher, and my Honors Chem teacher (who has an MFA in Literature).

Senior Year Schedule:
AP Physics C
AP English Lit
AP Stats
AP Calc AB/BC
AP Gov
Spanish 3

ECs and Achievements:

Captain of Quiz Bowl Team (team went to the NAQT nationals last year in Chicago, won't tell you where we placed but I will say that we placed in the top 30)

Captain of Varsity Golf (I set several records at 4 different courses, but nothing special)

Science Olympiad team member

Ocean Science Bowl team member

Member of the Senior Men and Women (it's basically an honor society for the seniors)

Constitution Team co-captain

I volunteer at a nonprofit for veterans of the Iraq War, approx. 300 hours

And no, my school doesn’t rank

actually, you are exactly the kind of candidate that WashU usually admits, to be honest…not at the tippy top, but incredibly strong…and those SAT’s will make their mouths water…good luck!!

Confession: the 3.42 GPA was due to a few Bs and 2 failing grades during the first semester of my sophomore year. On the (somewhat) plus side, I have kept up a 4.0 since the second semester of my sophomore year. How have my chances changed?

Did you actually have a valid reason for why you got the F’s? Or was it from lack of effort?

Hey!
Your GPA is on the low end for WUSTL but seems like you had an upwards trend after that.
I say WOW at your SATI scores, and yea that should put you in the ballpark.
Cool science ECs…I can imagine you fitting in here with the rest of my nerdy (but cool) classmates.
I say good shot and good luck!

How do you manage such a high SAT score with a relatively low GPA?

Xcross- Lack of effort… :(

Honors Centaur- I did ok during my freshman year, then I REALLY took a nosedive during the first semester of my sophomore year. After that it was like a punch in the stomach for me and it motivated me to stay at a 4.0 and work my butt off outside of academics for the rest of my high school years. Hence, the high SATs.

bump anyone?

You have a good shot man. Don’t sweat too hard.
