3.5 GPA, 1270 SAT, Give a Chance for ME!!!

I attend a public school in GA. Kinda competitive. A few people go to the Ivys or other top 20 schools. I really want to go Rice and I applied ED. I am unsure of whether or not I will get in because my grades/test scores are both low. I have great ECs (IMO) and I am an African American. Plus, I have shown lots (I mean a lot) of interest in Rice.

SAT MA-650, CR-620, WR-600
SAT II Bio 750, US History 630

My GPA is only a 3.5uw (school doesnt weight) and I'm ranked abt 53/500
I have taken THE MOST demanding schedule including 3 yrs of French and 1 yr of Latin

Last year had AP classes in Gov, Hist(4) , and Bio(3)

Hooks
I'm a black male
I went to Africa this summer on a medical mission
As a child I was abused and raped and then went to live with my grandma. In 2007, she passed away and then I had to move from OH to GA in the middle of junior year.
Worked 15-20hr/week (part of that at church though, I was there nearly every day!) to supplement our family income

Awards - Nothing special

Honor Roll
Commended Nat'l Merit Scholar
Published Poet
Gold Metal on Nat'l Latin Exam
Made Homecoming Court
Some church awards

I think it looks like I do too much but I was actually very involved in everything that I did.

Recs - One from AP US History teacher, kinda boring and basic but nice.
Other from my pastor it should be great too. He said he had to chop it down from 2 pgs though. (I'm upset Rice only looks at teacher and counselor)

Essays

Common - About me overcoming abuse, rape, suicide, and my grandma's death and how it helped me to become a better person

Supplement - How being in Africa changed me and I now value others differently

Schools

RICE - ED I want this school so badly - info session, overnight visit, great interview
The woman who will read my app (I know she will) knows me by name and face (long story). I have also heard that the majority of people doing ED for Rice are in-state and being OOS is a huge advantage. I have also heard that being an non-athletic African-American male is also a plus. I'm not 100% about these statements but it makes sense kinda. Well what do you guys think???

Other schools if Rice rejects me
Emory (EDII) - visited and info session
Vanderbilt - interview (sends me lots of stuff if that matters)
Cornell - probably not
UGA - safety
Morehouse - safety

So any chance???

At teh level of the really competitive schools, it's always a gamble, but I think I can say pretty safely that you have a very, very, very good shot (damn, I was gonna try for Vanderbilt, but my app isn't nearly this good, though my GPA is higher...). Definitely Rice and Emory, Vanderbilt will be a bit more difficult but still very good, you probably have a better shot at Cornell than you think (but they have to turn away lots of amazing apps just because the all top talent applies there and they just don't have enough spots). UGA and Morehouse you said yourself- safeties. Be very careful with your essay - it's a very personal and attention-grabbing topic (o.O hugs), but you might be treading the fine line of sounding like you want pity if you get an unsympathetic reader. Your minority status should help too, especially at Cornell. Good luck!

Chance me back? :)

I tried to make it show case the positive side of me and how it has helped me in my ministry and motivated me to excel in life. So do you really think that I have a good chance even with my low grades and test scores?

bump it up!

c'mon you guys

I believe you show a compelling story and universities like Rice will understand that. I'd say good chance, best of luck to you!

definitely a compelling app, maybe a little low for SATs, but that won't matter nearly as much for you...My guess is you're set for Rice, good luck

I think you have a great chance at both Rice and Emory, which are fantastic schools by the way. I visited Emory and was thoroughly impressed by the campus, endowment, surrounding city, people, tour guide who walked backwards, everything. Not too familiar with Vanderbilt, so I can't say, but something tells me you have a pretty good chance there too.

this reassurance is helping to calm me down in this time of great distress.
I love Rice :) !

thank you to those who have already posted. Anyone else?

bump bump bump it up

u scared me by saying 1270!!! haha

i think you have a shot!
your essays will probably be a huge part of this application considering the lower scores on gpa and sat. im sure u did a good job on your essay considering the topic.
its GREAT that you have a good contact with the school and especially that lady.

also, sorry about your childhood, sucks to hear =/ but then it made you into who you are today :) which is hopefully someone who will get admitted to rice :)

good luck man! :) really hope you get in!
chance me back if u want :)
