3.5 GPA Calculation for Freshman Engineering Students

Could someone explain to me how the 3.5 GPA is calculated for automatic admission into your first choice of engineering major? I thought if my son just averaged a 3.5 for the entire year, he would be guaranteed admission but he tells me that it’s a different calculation. Of course he didn’t take notes when they went over it all :(.

Thanks so much!

Their are two types of gpa’s - a cumulative gpa( which includes all courses taken by a student) and an college gpa (which includes all classes taken for a specific degree plan). Engineering uses a college gpa to calculate if a student has the 3.5 requirement that is calculated by taking grades from CBK courses.

Thank you @lessonwitch2. My son managed to squeak out the 3.5 so we are very happy about that. He also just received his official letter of acceptance yesterday.

@lessonwitch2 @Quirky813 ETAM uses a CUMULATIVE GPA as stated here: https://engineering.tamu.edu/academics/advisors-procedures/entry-to-a-major/general-engineering-program/class-of-2021
