So I went to the unc website and it said that the average transfer gpa into the b-school was a 3.512. To me, that seems quite low considering how highly ranked the program is. For UT, the average gpa is a little above a 3.8.

Is there some special reason the transfer gpa is so low?
Would it be considerably harder for an oos student to transfer?

are you sure that that is not the average GPA for already enrolled UNC students who have been admitted to the business school? i know it's a 3.5 as well.

I maybe mistaken, but from what I understand, as a transfer student you are required to spend at least one semester in the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC before you can apply to the Business school. You aren't actually transferring directly into the business program. So I guess the 3.5 IS the average for already enrolled students, considering you really can't apply unless you are enrolled at UNC.

I'm trying to transfer into the biz program myself, and also have a 3.6 gpa. My main concern right now is just getting accepted into UNC, period.

Yeah, I don't know what the transfer GPA is for students who transfer then go into Kenan Flagler. The 3.5 number is for those already enrolled at UNC. You CANNOT apply directly in. Which is bad, but I guess works it for UNC, so whatever.

It says at the bottom that the average admitted student had a 3.512 GPA, and the average denied student had a 2.979. That's a pretty sizable gap.

Also, if I've already taken macro and microeconomics, would UNC seriously expect me to take an Intro. to Economics class?

THAT'S FROM TRANSFERRING INSIDE NORTH CAROLINA INTO KENAN FLAGLER! IT'S NOT HARD FOR AN OUT OF STATE TO TRANSFER INTO UNC (NO HARDER THAN INSTATE THAT IS). TRANSFERRING INTO KENAN FLAGLER IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY FROM OUT OF SCHOOL. YOU HAVE TO DO A SEMESTER AT UNC BEFORE YOU CAN APPLY! ALL OF US HAVE PROBABLY SEEN THAT. HAVE YOU READ THIS THREAD AT ALL?

If you've taken micro and macro, then I don't think "intro to econ" is necessary. Just do the rest of the pre-requisites, accounting, writing, calculus et cetera.

I think this more the page you were looking forward to. I don't really believe it. KF is a pretty respected UG Business Program, it seems a little low. However, I was also told that the average GPA of transfers was 3.3....

Since 101 is a specific prerequisite, without alternatives, I think it is safe to assume that credit for it is required, either by AP credit or actually taking the course. Perhaps exceptions are made, but I would recommend you inquire into that possibility and not just make an assumption.

This is just anecdotal, however, I know of several students who applied to the B school (who were already UNC students) and were rejected and all had gpa's over 3.5. They were told that their internships/work experience was lacking. So I think much more goes into the decision than just gpa.

I don't see how that could factor in too much. I mean, how much work experience/internships can someone possibly have by their sophomore year? And I highly doubt that they factor in work experience in high school, as that would be highly prejudicial.

I don't know how much it factors in--just relating what these students told me came out of their meeting with (whoever meets with them) after rejection. I know one girl said that they told her they like to see "significant" internship experience summer after freshman year. One girl who was accepted did some kind of internship during school year.

I went to Academic day at Carolina for the Business College and the Dean of Kenan Flagler(he is da man) said that no matter your gpa you really need to have strong extracurriculars. He said to do the best you can do with your studies and do as much outside of the classroom as you can and you will be fine. I am assuming that you need at least a 3.0 to get in. About 60% who apply get in(that is high because your advisor may talk you out of applying if your GPA is low). I was just suprised that they stressed voluteer/leadership/activeness in UNC community so much.

The micro and macro requirements are upper level classes for which the Intro class is a prerequisite. If you've taken micro and macro as lower level courses then you will likely have to take micro and macro upper level courses.

crs,
To my knowledge you do not need any specific GPA, nor do you need to apply. Once you are accepted into UNC you are automatically admitted into the College of Arts & Sciences. You only need to apply for your major if it is in one of the specific schools, such as business and journalism. The only requirement to major in economics is that you do relatively well in your economics classes (obviously) otherwise your advisers will most likely steer you away from it.
