3.5 yrs at cc - problem for transfer to top LAC?

Hi! I am applying for transfer admission to several LACs from a highly regarded community college in NY. I attended full-time all semesters except for my first. Now, though, I am wondering if the fact that I attended for so long (3.5 years instead of the 2 expected) will raise some eyebrows. I had a very unique high school experience due to a complicated situation that I explained in a supplemental essay, so they may assume that I stayed to make up for some of the lack of education I received in the years prior to college; however, I also didn't apply for so long because my grandmother was sick at home and I didn't feel comfortable leaving during that period (and other local options were not appealing). My grandmother primarily raised me, so it was more like my mother being sick, you know? I don't want to write another essay, but should I write a short letter explaining the reasons why I stayed for so long or just leave it alone?

Bump.

:(

I am not sure we have enough information to provide opinions. How many credits do you have? I don’t think the fact that you spent 3.5 years at cc is an issue, as many students take a while since they go part-time. Having gone full time for 3 years, if I understand you correctly, might be a concern; which is why I asked about # of credits.

We might also need to know about the complicated hs situation you are talking about. Was part of your time at the cc taking classes which were used for hs credit?

Mod note: I think your thread title may also limit views; no one knows from the title “Question - please read” what the topic is, so they don’t know if they have anything to say. I can re-title it for you and will try to do so. If you want a different title, PM me or post here and I will do that.

Hi, Andale. I have around 100 credits. Yes, 3 of the 3.5 years were full time.
The time at CC was not used for HS at all. Basically, I didn’t GO to HS because I was very chronically ill during that period of time. I received a diploma anyway because of education provided by the hospitals, but it was very much a BS. I spent the first year sort-of adjusting to being in a real school. As I mentioned, I stayed for several reasons. I had enough credits to transfer earlier (even though I didn’t finish my associates until last may), so that wasn’t the issue.

I wouldnt bother explaining. Its not THAT much extra time. Hell I spend 5 years in community college and i wasnt applying to LACs but to UCLA and no one cared.

The only concern i would see is if you stayed extra because you REPEATED courses. If your GPA is solid and you simply have extra units that would not impact you negatively except for in just about all schools you will only be allowed to transfer between 60-90 units and majority of schools are closer to the 60.
