I love how I always get the most attention from the chances threads.
Making up a creative name for it can def. help.
I already got around 865 views, and 59 replies.

Come on guys, have some respect. It’s checkers, not chess.

It is not checkers.

This thread is innately funny.

You guys on this thread have more drama than a Korean soap :P

Henry: in the nicest way possible, flat the **** out. Yes, you’re international so you’ll be faced with higher standards and tougher competition. But no one can predict your chances, so sit still and do what you can, buddy. Like lots of people have said, the 12 AP thing is likely too much. Do what you gotta do and then sit back 'cause there are some things you can’t change (3.0 grades that strain your GPA). Good luck.

Thank you AgentTwiddle.
I wonder what you wrote as ****.

I do not have a 3.0 though! I do not know to how to recaculate GPA, that is my problem, haha.

But I think a 3.0 would suggest straight Bs, and I have a healthy balance of As and B+s.

Glad this is funny for you guys.

Ahh these threads are what the give the Chance Me section such a bad reputation.

Just curious, why do you tell people to PM you for details?

ok please guys…chill out
if you don’t want to chance him, then get out of here lol
as simple as that

henrymore…i wouldn’t be too worried
colleges look at your application in whole
although you have an “average” GPA, as you might think
it won’t pose as a severe weakness
my friend, had a 3.5, <20% rank…and got into harvard
however, he had 2400, all 800, all 5’s
he was also an intel finalist…
if you have a weak point, make sure everything else compensates for it

This is a really funny thread, henrymoore you think we are kidding, but we are not.

PS. STILL WAITING FOR A PM ON WHY YOU GOT A B IN SPORTS AND YOUR A NATIONALLY RANKED ATHLETE. (Key word being athlete, last time I checked in Chess and Checkers you only move your hand and arm, to me thats not really a sport :)

I’m not gonna get into the whole drama of this tread.

henrymoore, I don’t mean to attack you, so don’t fight back, just think about it.

From what you posted (and I’m no expert on this), you look desperate. Like you’re trying too hard. The only way to compensate for any weak points in your application is to stand out some other way, it’s that simple. You’re probably thinking that when they’ll see that you took 19 APs they’ll think “oh God, this guy is amazing. So what that he doesn’t have a perfect GPA if he managed to to THAT”. And I’m sorry to say that, but it seems very unlikely. What I think looking at your OP is: “This guy has no life.”. You didn’t bother to post your ECs (I would live to see them if you could PM me) but from what you did post, it seems like you’re trying to get into HYPSM with just SATs. They are good (I wish I had those) but most kids who are trying there have similar. Just like IBfootballer said: you don’t deserve to go to an Ivy just because you worked hard. No one is gonna be impressed by that (all kids trying to get to top schools worked hard).

Just think about that: there are A LOT of kids applying to those schools. The officers have seen a lot. Do you really think they will not see that you’re doing all of that (crazy courseload, retaking SATs etc.) just to impress them?

The only way for you is to show that you’re a unique person anyway, that you have a passion in life, that you’re a mature and smart guy, that school is not your whole life. Do that and you’ll have decent shot. Or if you actually do not have anything but grades to show for it - lower your expectations. There are a lot of other amazing schools that would be happy to have you.

This is just a one person’s opinion but that what I think…

There is no drama, FunnyFunnyGirl (I love your username)

I am not desperate, and I am not fighting anymore.
I accept my mediocre B+s, and I understand that those could be detrimental to your applications.

My concern was the rankings of various high schools.
I highly doubt that my school is as known as Exeter, or public one, Stuyvesant, for that matter.

I am not a lazy slacker. My concern was the correlation between GPA and SAT; even though I have a superb SAT of 2400 (2320 was good too, but my writing was low), my GPA is a mere 3.7, which might suggest that I am indolent.

I am glad that adcoms see more than numbers.
Thanks for your reply! And good luck to you!!

@E2012CY: Well, I do not have intel, but my GPA is 3.7 and I am top 5%.
I am glad that schools evaluate in context (so I shouldn’t be worried, if my school is a top college prep).
I don’t have intel. What now?!?!?!?!?!

^
lol.
that was sarcasm :)

thanks guys once again for helpful insights.

I think you’d actually have a better chance if adcoms did only see numbers. For you to get in, a college has to like you. To think that you’re a desirable classmate. And the replies on this thread have not been going in that direction.

I’m not making any judgments on the person you actually are-- I’ve never met you, I don’t know you. But really, neither do the adcoms. They’re going to judge you based on how you translate onto paper. And if you come across on your app in any way like you did here, well, the colleges will likely react just the way people have in the past 5 pages.

If it is true that only 20 people from your country apply to American colleges, then good for you. I’m also an int’l applicant, but from South Korea, where hundreds of students apply each year. So don’t blow it because you take yourself too seriously to be likable. There are many other people who are just as qualified academically.

I’m calling it now- the sport in which the OP is nationally ranked is…wait for it… curling.

Oh wow. The first time in a long time I’ve heard someone even mention curling. xDDDDDD

I did not say you ARE desperate. I said you LOOK desperate. By that I meant you do not make a good impression (to us and probably to adcoms)

OK, to a casual observer the correlation between your GPA and SAT (plus the fact you’re top 5%) says: he’s smart, he does fine in a competitive school, but nothing exeptional. It doesn’t say you’re lazy. It says you’re not the best in your school.
However they do look for the best out there. You’re not gonna stand out by your grades (even if you got straight As next year), your excellent SATs do help but it takes more than that to get into HYPSM.

It would be SO cool if it was curling. :)

It says you’re not the best in your school.
However they do look for the best out there.

…
Good point
Are you rank nr. 1?

Okay I am closing this thread.
Funnyfunnygirl, the thread has not been going that direction, but great, whatever you think so.

OK, henrymoore, I’m really sorry I replied to your post. I am clearly unqualified to chance you or give you advice: I’m not nr 1 and I’m not going to Harvard. Just forget what I said. I was just trying to help…

^Hey Funnyfunnygirl.
This is the problem with online communication.
I did NOT mean it that way.

I am glad that you gave me advice, and I sincerely thank you for it.

I love hearing more and more advices.
I just wanted to ask if you are rank nr.1, seeing that you are also applying from Europe.

Maybe at the end of each of my post, I should ask emoticons like  to ensure you that I was not being sarcastic; so that I do not come across as a selfish braggart or something, haha.

Coming from Harvard?
I am sure it is if not the best (one of the best) institutions in the world.
But I am sure you do not equate Harvard with giving advices.

So FunnyFunnyGirl! Relax, Haha!

And this time I will add an emoticon to clearly express what I was thinking :)
