3.6 GPA-Where can I get in?

Hey guys.. so I am a senior in Highschool and I have a pretty crappy gpa. I have a 3.6 unweighted. I just want to know where I might be able to get accepted

I had serious health problems with cancer in the early years of my highschool. It was kinda hard for me to focus on school at that time......(I am going to probably write about this in my essays)

Thank you guys!!!

You will most likely get into about 80% of the colleges on your list, with CMU, NWU, and USC being your reaches. I wouldn’t be too confident about Georgia Tech either because it’s becoming much more selective as the years pass, but it all depends on the major you apply to.

If the majority of your poor grades come from freshman year, you should be fine for the UCs and CMU because they ignore 9th grade. Again, however, it all depends on you desired major. I’m assuming you wish to go into CS or an IT field? In that case, you’ll be facing a much more self-selective applicant pool.

Your ECs are excellent. They are very concentrated and demonstrate your passion. I would maybe try taking the SAT again, especially if that was only your first or second time.

UC Berkeley - reach for CS/engineering
UCLA - reach for CS/engineering
CMU - high reach for CS (apply ED maybe?)
U Washington - reach for CS direct admit, but you could risk being accepted to an undeclared major and transfer to CS (very competitive)
USC - hard to say. . They’re very scores-based. Bring you SAT score up about 100-150 points and I’d say a low reach
Northwestern - reach, but they are very holistic in their approach and you essays would definitely have an impact on their decision
Georgia Tech - match (although I would say the School of Computing might be a low reach)
Everything else - safeties and matches

Again, I’m not sure if you even want to major in CS, and if you don’t, I apologize. This is just an approximation based off of your personal interests :)

THANK YOU!!! and yes I want to major in CS @AnEpicIndian‌

I am planning on taking the SAT again. Also how would berkeley sound… I heard they are also more hollistic in their application @AnEpicIndian‌

OH and also I am probably majoring in Business/Minor in CS @AnEpicIndian‌

Berkeley could be a hit or miss for you. In state applicants have been having a very tough time gaining admission to the UCs due to their relatively low tuition, which doesn’t do garbage to California’s budget issues. If you can pay the full amount without aid, you’d have a slightly better chance than the average applicant.

You can minor in anything you want regardless of major. If you choose to apply as a business major, which is still a fairly competitive major (not nearly as competitive as EECS), you would again have a slightly better chance. Or you could do it the other way around. It’s all up to you.

And yes you are correct. Berkeley does in fact use the most holistic approach out of all the UCs.

hhmmm ok. Also I am going to pay full without financial aid. I live in CA and I really want to get into Berkeley :(( @AnEpicIndian‌

Regardless of whether or not you write about your cancer in your essays, please make sure that your guidance counselor knows about it and understands that it’s the reason for the lower grades in early high school. That is exactly the sort of thing that the GC should write about in their portion of the application.

I’m a cancer survivor, too: good luck to you :)

Why are you doing AP Physics B (which doesn’t exist anymore, im assuming 1&2) and AP Physics C? Or are you doing Physics C E and M and Mechanics? If it is Physics “B” its worthless for you if you are also taking Physics C.

As for your GPA, its not that low. Im sure with your story, you’ll be fine.
