+3.60 Uni of Iowa GPA sufficient for a transfer to UIUC?

The reason why I want to transfer from University of Iowa's mechanical engineering program to UIUC's ME program before my sophomore year starts is because I'm an Illinois resident, and my dad is an employee there, so the 50% student tuition discount kicks in during junior year.

That's about ~$89K (Illinois) vs ~$120K (Iowa) after 3 years of college, not including scholarships, but Iowa doesn't offer very many scholarships, especially for out-of-state students.

My high school GPA was a 3.39.

My Uni of Iowa GPA is very likely to be higher than 3.60. I'm also active with SAE baja and AIAA, and semi-active with ASME (fairly inactive student engineering organizations compared to SAE or AIAA).

I want to apply for a sophomore transfer for two reasons; to buy an extra year to setup connections at UIUC (as some of the companies that recruit from UIUC lack any presence at Uni of Iowa), and just in case if the transfer application is rejected, thus allowing me to try again in the future.

My sister says that UIUC’s engineering program would probably require a +3.8 GPA since the business school transfer average is a 3.8 GPA. I highly doubt it’s correct, but I know UIUC will not accept a 3.0 GPA.

I left UIUC’s engineering office a voice mail to ask about their average transfer GPA, but it’s likely that it will take them 1-2 weeks to reply (based on past experiences).

Did you apply for Spring 2014 or Fall 2014 admission? Did you hear back yet?
