I am a rising senior and will be applying RD. Everything else on my application looks fine besides my GPA. Top 5%. 2330 SAT, most rigorous coursework offered/in my grade/in decades, moved states after frosh year so it got kind of rough. My "hook" is being an internationally recognized pianist. Still undecided whether I want to major in music/Econ. Is my GPA enough to be an automatic no, and if so what can I do to offset it slightly?

I go to a decent public high school in New England

No GPA is enough to be an automatic no. It puts you at a disadvantage but it doesn’t rule you out. You still have a chance but nobody can quantify how good of a chance. You’ll be fine.

no, you would be considered a qualified student. (calculate your AI # for example, and you will see you are definitely not an automatic out at any top college) good luck, everything looks excellent, that GPA with a rigorous course load is still strong.

Okay thanks, any other opinions?

are u trying to get into the columbia / juillard exchange by any chance? anyway, your SAT looks great, and considering your rank (i think the rank “cutoff” is like top 10%? ) I think your GPA should be fine .

There is no rank cutoff.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen someone get into Columbia/top school with around my GPA?

Yes.

@skieurope can you give me more info about that person? Did s/he attend a top high school?

It is not one particular student. My school has dozens of kids that get accepted into top colleges and universities each year. Yes, it is a highly ranked school.

Many of kids from a multitude of backgrounds get in with a GPA near yours. Tons of kids with GPAs much higher than yours get rejected. It’s not a pure numbers game.

@mistanervous I’ve never seen one person on CC get in with ~my gpa…so I guess it’s not “many”

Exactly what portion of the applicant pool do you think is represented on this site? This site is predominantly frequented by extremely high achievers who need to be reminded that they are some of the best students. Most people who get into these schools have never even heard of college confidential or don’t feel the need to post their stats on the internet for validation. Just because you don’t see many of any particular subgroup posting on this site doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

If I wanted to apply ED, would it be worth it/have an impact?

From the Columbia website:

3.67 is a great gpa jk I have the same but if u have an upward trend it’s all good

^ I have an upward trend in all my subject except math. How much will this hurt me? I totally overestimated myself, thought I could pull off being the only junior ever in my school to take calc BC (given I do have an inexperienced teacher). I’ve gotten As in all my other math courses.

Idk if u want to major in engineering/math then that is not ideal but unless u failed or got a c in bc calc I wouldn’t worry about it

Even if u did I think the straight a’s would lessen the impact of the calc grade and the fact that u were a junior…lol I’m a senior and I’m taking ab calc this year
