Great GPA i suppose, but doesnt a C+ in cell biology make my transcript look like shi*, especially since med school has a WHOLE LOT of biology knowledge that is required. Will that really ruin my chances a lot to have that on my transcript? Im a sophmore-junior and i was wondering what i should do at this point. I have a B+ in general biology, C+ in cell biology, but a 3.7-3.8 GPA with all science classes in two years (just 1 general ed class). Should i retake cell biology? Or should i just take 2-3 more biology classes and get A's or A-'s in them to prove that i could improve in biology? Am i screwed?

My gpa was a 3.49 with B's in general chem both semesters, and a C in second semester Organic...and a C- in first semester OChem lab.

Most schools won't let you retake a class if you got above a C or whatever would be necessary for a Pass if you were taking it on a Pass/no pass system. If you're really that worried about it, take an upper level class in bio.

BRM, you got into med school the first time you applied right?

The BCPM GPA is what matters. One C isn't the end of the world. I don't think some extra bio classes would hurt. Do NOT retake your class.

Yep, first time to two schools.

Let it be clear though that I had a very high MCAT score (not as high as BDM's, but high enough to teach for Kaplan), and a ton of leadership and involvement. I feel it safe to say that I interview well, and other than research, I had everything else. My personal statement was excellent and had decent amounts of clinical and volunteer experience. And I was able to sell what I had done, bringing attention to parts of my application that I thought was particularly strong (the leadership and involvement) and to experiences from HS that I wasn't able to put on my AMCAS, but were a key part of who I am and why I desire to be a physician. Further, I applied to schools where I had a chance. Looking back, I probably didn't apply to the full set of schools I should have (only 7, and 4 were state schools and I only completed secondaries to 4), but the ones I did apply to with the exception of Michigan State were probably appropriate.

The point is, any one part of your application is only part of the equation and through a number of different ways you can increase your chances. Much like you would look at any enzymatic pathway as a sequence of steps, all of which could go wrong, look at med school admissions as a sequence of steps, where you can either help or hinder your chances.

i second BDM. take some other upper div bio classes (and biochem)

so should i not retake the class?

1.) No.

2.) If and only if your school will completely erase the C+ from your transcript -- and I've never found a school which will do that -- should you retake the class.
