3.7-3.9 uw GPA Thread

I love this thread!

DS is a junior. His weighted GPA is 3.8. ACT score is 33, no SAT yet. 4 AP’s by the end of Jr year and 6 or 7 by the end of Sr year. EC’s some leadership (captain of sport teams), 2 varsity sports, symphony, Latin club, and Tri-M.

With his GPA being on the low side its already tricky deciding where to apply but he also wants to play baseball in college. His coach says he might be able to play D1 at a non big 10 school…but those become reaches for his GPA such as

Notre Dame
BC
any Ivy
College of the HC
William and Mary

And he wants to go to Med school which means graduating college with a 4.0 according to a DR friend.

@happimom

Wow. Congrats on your son’s ACT score!

I think I fit a little better in this thread, though I’m still lower than most of you :3
I’m a HS Senior
UW gpa is…3.86 i think? I sumitted W gpa on my apps which is 4.09
SAT - (single test day) 1950= CR 640, M 540 Wr 770 … but my best math score was a 580 which makes my best score 1990. Didn’t quite break 2000 haha oh well I’m content.
ACT - 26. I hated the ACT. only took it once so I could say that I took it haha
I’ve got “ok” EC’s…JV softball, student council, volunteered various places, work experience,
I don’t know if this is what yall mean by a “Hook” but I went to Joplin for four days after that tornado in 2011 and helped with the cleanup. I also went to Nicaragua this past summer on a 10 day medical volunteer trip with a team of doctors, dentists, and physical therapists. I wrote some pretty good essays/short answers about those two trips.
My English teacher told me that she gave me a killer recommendation on the common app, but my other teacher STILL hasn’t filled his out. And one of my applications is due tomorrow so that sucks. Probably won’t be getting accepted there now.

I feel like I’ve aplied to a lot less schools than most people but here’s my list…

Baylor - Accepted w/ 50k merit scholarship
Occidental - will submit in the next few days.
Washington & Lee - submitted
Southern Methodist U - submitted

People jelly of your GPA/Scores  lol

@chloe
Congrats on your scholarship! I hope you get into the school of your choice! ∩__∩

halcyonheather, with Reed and OSU on your list - do not overlook Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. You are in a perfect position to get a generous merit scholarship from this top tier liberal arts school. My daughter got her BA and MBA there and loved it.

halcyonheather, since you like the area, you could also consider Lewis & Clark, Puget Sound and Whitman; all offer merit money.

Son’s stats are 3.7, sat 1: 2200, sat2: 2x750, 9aps, 12 other college credits
founded two clubs, president of a 3rd, class vp, all-league tennis, etc.
in retrospect, should have taken 5 aps and raised his gpa a couple of points.

wesleyan passed ed (sigh)
accepted ea u mich, tulane (w merit)
really excited about u mich but he decided to do this:

far reach:
brown
northwestern
wash u
rice

reach:
emory
carleton

match:
mcgill
u rochester
oberlin

expect it to come down to mcGill vs u mich.

3.87 uw, 2170 sat, 32 act
Rejected from Columbia ED and Notre Dame EA. accepted to purdue and Pitt. Going to purdue.
Cut and dry.

3.75 GPA here. My main school is Notre Dame, which has me a little worried. I got a good ACT though, so that will help. It also doesn’t help that I’m only in the top 25% of my class.

Is it weird that I only applied to four schools? or is it mostly these kids parents pushing them to apply to so many? my parents don’t really care where i go so that could be why…

No. Imo it shows that you’re confident. I’m applying to lots because I’m terrified of rejection and I most likely won’t get into my top choice.
My mom doesn’t care too much either. I’m an adult so I suppose doing stuff on my own is warranted.

Chloe - I pushed my son to apply to more than he would have on his own. Actually, just a month or so ago, he was going to apply to fewer, but then after reading too many posts on this forum about superstars getting rejected, I got nervous and wanted to make sure he felt like he had several options come springtime. We also need financial aid for the private institutions and since the state school he applied to is his last choice, I’m trying to avoid his having to go there just for financial reasons. Hoping he either gets into a college (or two!) that is very generous with need-based aid or a college (or two!) that gives him very good merit aid. I feel lucky that other CC posters suggested some great options for him that we ended up taking.

Assuming they’re all good fits and affordable for you, I think it’s great that you only applied to four!

@fosterte

Wow, that is almost word for word my situation. I can go to Penn State for about 15k/year (faculty discount), but I really really do not want to go there. I think i would hate a big school. That’s why I applied to so many schools I know I’ll get into; Im hoping for big merit money.

Yeah, I’ll definitely need all the need-based aid i can get. I got one acceptance like I said before, and I’m pretty confident that i’ll get into 2/3 of the schools im waiting to hear back on. there’s one though that I’m sort of expecting a denial, which is okay because i probably could never afford it anyways. My aunt though, a Dartmouth grad, told me to never let price affect my decision on where to go, because if a college wants you they will give you the money to go there. Hope that’s true and I don’t throw myself into debt as a 22 year old haha

That probably used to be true, but it isn’t anymore. I think it’s best to find a good balance between cost and how much you like the achool

Bumping this

Ladeda.
How are apps coming, guys?

I’m finishing up my last one (Smith). Seventeen schools!!! I really hope that I at least get into one of the schools that I’m reaching for.

3.78 UW 2260 SAT

Hopefully my essays are good?

I’m all done. I have to write a scholarship essay for Wooster next weekend. Topic is “Why do people tell stories?” Fun, fun, fun.
