hi there everyone, i'm just wondering, is a 3.7 GPA (on a scale of 4.3, though ppl rarely get past 4) from a good community college enough to get into Cornell? Given, of course, that i have great recs, essays and ECs. thanks for any input on this issue.

What college are you planning to apply to? For CALS...they consider you competitive with a 3.0....3.5 if you're applying to the Biological Sciences major.

A 3.0 is competitive for transfer into CALS? I honestly did not know that.

Yeah...I was also surprised...but I've worked with many people in the admissions department to help plan out transfer day and this is what they said to prospective transfers.

I mean...a 3.0 does seem low and doesn't guarantee you admission by any means. And like I said....you need at least 3.5 to be considered for biology.

saying a 3.0 is "competitive" for admissions is a great way to help boost the transfer applicant pool. Each one is an extra $70 for Cornell.

but lets be real, a 3.04 just isn't going to cut it - there are a few exceptions, but they're limited to only a few spots in the class. You're going to want a 3.6+ to be considered "competitive". I guarantee you that having below a 3.5 will put you in the bottom of the barrel as far as GPA's go. Take a very strong GPA and add spotless recs, essays, and strong EC's, and I'd say somebody has a decent shot.

Thanks for the responses so far. i'm applying to the college of arts and sciences for sophomore entry, so my major is kind of undecided yet. any idea how this is gonna work/ my chances?

If you apply to popular or big majors such as biological sciences you want something that is above 3.5. If you are applying to smaller majors, you want something around 3.3 (A-). It doesn't mean one major is harder than the other it's just the way the number works out, since there are only certain amount of spots for each major.

what's the general GPA for majors such as political science/interntational relations and art? i'm thinking of double-majoring....

arts and sciences is the hardest school at cornell to transfer to aside from architecture. the admit rate is <8%

thanks. any other opinions?

easiest major to get in CALS?

please look at the thread named "What is the easiest major to get into CALS?"

I transferred into Cornell. All the transfers at orientation had at least a 3.7. So I would definitely apply, but realize that you are probably hovering around that cutoff point. This is for the CALS students, because I am one and they group us together.

Yeah...I'm a CALS transfer...had a 3.9. Go ahead and apply....just make sure you present a very strong application :-)

What majors did you guys transfer into?

Biology and Society

AEM (10 char)

Nice, both pretty competitive majors. How are you guys liking Cornell? Everything you'd hoped it would be? Also, what school did you guys transfer from (it's cool if you don't want to release that)?

How about ILR? Anyone here?

I transferred from SUNY New Paltz. I hated Cornell for most of my first semester....but now that I'm graduating in May...I'm beginning to see that I did get everything I wanted (a good challenge and better education) and I really am sad to be leaving...
