3.7 GPA good enough for Rice?

Can anyone tell me the chances of getting into Rice University (and possibly Swarthmore/Wellesley) with...

GPA: 3.73
SATs: 2220 - 710R, 740M, 790W
SATIIs (so far): 640 French, 680 Math2, 780 Chem

A few ECs...(nothing too extraordinary)

French Club Pres
Active in Student Gov
Harvard Model Congress participant
Dance company in school
A Bunch of piano awards...

Thanks so much!

Oh and I don't know if AP scores count for the application...but here are my scores..if they help

US Gov/Pol: 5
Comparative Gov/Pol: 2 (didnt take the class)
Chemistry: 5
Calculus AB: 5
World History: 4
English Lang: 4

SATs look adequate, but is that GPA uw or weighted?

its uw...weighted is 4.38

Tiger024, your SAT score actually adds up to 2240. :)

3.7/2240 isn't auto-reject at Rice.

ooops thats cuz the math score is supposed to be 720...
got me excited there for a second haha...does the 20 pts make a difference?

If that 3.7 isn't in the top 10%, then i'd say your chances are very slim.

Expand on the ECs (i.e. tell us some details). SAT IIs are a touch low (besides Chem), but other then that your chances seem OK.

3.7 is good def. plus a 2240 SATs I had a 3.65 and was top 10% with SATs below 2000 and i got in interim decision ur good

Very competitive at Wellesley. More of a reach at Swarthmore.

If you raised your SAT II scores, you would be about a match for Rice.

I actually see no problem with your GPA or your SAT scores. I think your application will hinge upon your ability to write a good essay.

wow thanks for the feedback everyone

Be sure to include your AP scores on your application - they are very strong. You should be able to do much better on your Math II, although you may have to review because it is material you covered a while ago.

If you are a Texan, be aware the Rice is harder instate - many Texans apply but they are looking for geographical diversity.

Have you looked at Carnegie Mellon?

Are you a Texan? If so, you need to raise your SAT scores if you're going to Rice. If not, yu're fine.

nope I'm not a Texan...from Maryland actually. phew

Oh and I forgot mention my rank which is comparatively pretty low. I go to a pretty competitive public school and my 3.7 there is ranked 88/370 (top 25%), and the weighted is about 13-14% (about 40-some/370). Will that hurt my chances significantly?

what school do u go to in MD

Rice's average UW GPA is around 3.89 (versus your 3.73), but that 4.3 W GPA is great. What's not so great is your rank. If your school puts that on the transcript, that will just kill your chances. Without it on the transcript you have a pretty good shot.

Average SAT scores at Rice are around 700/705/705 (2110)--so obviously you're okay there.

Like I said--if you aren't top 10% and Rice knows that, then A2Wolves is correct--you have no chance (less than 30%). If they don't know it and just go by GPA, then you are right around the average student UW GPA wise and above the average student W GPA-wise. Then your chances are around 50% to 60% or so.

Where do you get all these averages Calcruzer?

soo do you really think i'm definitely out because of the rank? cuz I'm pretty sure my school reports both w/uw ranks
