3.7 GPA, SAT 2100 a Safety at UCB...right?

Hey our school's Chinese Booster Club collects data from seniors who apply to colleges, and it looks like a 3.7 GPA (UW) and a 2100 is a safety at Berkeley.

But I remember that at CC, people get rejected with 3.9 UW and 2390s.

Of course there's more to SAT/GPAs for admission, but I remember from some thread that UCs only look at SAT/GPA.

Our school is a public school in Southern California (Arcadia High School).

No UCB is not a safety for someone with those stats.

absolutely not. ucb isnt a safety for anyone.

seconded .

thirded, even if it is in state.

Fourthed .

not a safety, but maybe closer to a match

It's actually a sure reject unless you also have some good ECs and some good essays to back them up. In that case it would be a match.

It could be safety for some people. Not for the person you listed above though. And UCs have essays and stuff, so no, they don't just look at GPA and SATs. Though I've heard that UCSD has some formula they use to admit.

tubaman93:

UCB: Match

I'd say slight reach.

I'll say it again: Our school collects data from students who report their GPAs and SATs, and most people with 3.7+ and 2100+ who applied got in. (They must've written super good essays and have extraordinary ECs too)

From what I've seen in the results (over 50% of the seniors report GPA/SAT), it looks like it's more of a match.

my ex had a 3.8 uw and 4.2 weighted with a 2150 and got into spring program (which means you're not good enough for fall so we'll give you spring).

so no, not a safety. he says it's my fault he didn't get into fall.

the only way I could see that being true is if Arcadia is a highly regarded Cali school. Is it very competitive or something? A 3.7/2100 from a regular public school trying to get into Berkeley is definitely not a safety...and anyone who thinks it's a safety is on some good crack. It's just not possible to call a school that accepts 26% of students with such a high median SAT a safety. In my humble opinion, any school in the top 30 is never a safety for anyone. Match is a better term.

Our school is pretty competitive, although it isn't hard to be in the lower 25% in the class (our school doesn't rank though). I think the reason for it is that our school is over 50% Asian (I'm Asian too), and many go into the UC system.

how exactly do the UCs rate a school's competitiveness ? By the amount of awards it has gotten ? By how many of it's students go on to UCs and other top schools ?

UC's don't.

I agree that Berkeley is more like a match than a safety with those stats, but I disagree with the people who say that it can never be a safety. My high school got 30-40 people into UCB every year, meaning that the people at the top of the class (assuming they had decent SATs) could be completely confident about admission (and I'm sure there are other CA schools like this). Because UCs are more stat based than private schools, if your stats are good enough, you are certain to get in.

nope. berkeley isn't a safety for anybody. it could be a match/slight reach..but very possible. if you're doing EECS or something..maybe a medium reach.

berkeley is not a safety.
