3.75 GPA=not good enough?

So I have and will continue to get several Bs during my high school years. Is a 3.75 GPA with the hardest possible course load (12 APs by graduation and everything else honros) too low to gain admission to brown or other selective schools like Columbia? My SAT is a 2240+,and I have a good set of ecs and a passion about the university.

It really depends on the context of your high school. Do you know your class rank?

woahhhh
unless you have personal reasons for applying to brown or have reeeeally bad ec’s
then i wouldnt apply to brown seriously
you look like youre in really tip top shape

(dont shoot me)

@kurimi i have no idea what you just said…

I’m in a similar situation with a 3.79. Highly competitive public, rigorous courseload, upward trend, 99%ile SAT, okay EC’s… ED’d brown. I’ll let you know what happens, but I honestly don’t think I have a chance. Brown REGULARLY rejects 4.0’s from my school.

Brown also rejects valedictorians without feeling bad about itself, so it’s not easy for Brown to make a case for students like us. Furthermore, 93%ish of the student body comes from the top 10% of their HS class, so we’re automatically in the bottom 7% of admitted students in terms of GPA. I’m Asian American so I’m not expecting any sympathy for that…

AND my interview was downright terrible. In retrospect, I should have called admissions to file a complaint but whatever… I don’t think that would’ve changed anything.

Oh and Bucky, I just want to say that I truly admire students like us. I think we have what it takes to succeed. I hate how our GPA’s sabotage our chances at college. I personally have worked really hard for my stats + whatnot and am consistently disappointed with where I stand. It’s frustrating, but we’ll get through this.

The thing about Brown I feel is that they highly de-emphasize the SAT. I have a 2270 superscored SAT but it’s really not that important in admissions. Brown looks more at transcripts I think because they want to know if you are a good fit for the Open Curriculum. My unweighted and weighted GPA are pretty solid (3.92, 4.35) so I would say I stand a fair shot since I have pretty good essays and EC’s.

Nobody really knows what they’re talking about. Apply if you want to!

Highlyedumacated- if you don’t mind sharing, what went wrong during your interview? Also, did you interview with an admissions officer or an alumni volunteer?

@Annafc

Absolutely… I’m not sure how much/little I should share on this site, but my interviewer simply probed in all the wrong places. He judged me based on my GPA and family in ways that I found obviously inappropriate. He was also highly unpersonable and very, very competitive in nature. He was the antithesis of what I believed to be the ideal Brown student, as most Brown alumni are, actually. He went on about how college admissions is a “crapshoot” and how I shouldn’t fret…? Quite frankly, the man was about thirty and still whining about college admissions. Someone give him a cupcake. Please.

Okay, I hope nobody in college admissions sees that. It was conducted over the phone, so whatever discomfort he caused me was fortunately invisible to him. Lo and behold, I was deferred, which is Brown’s way of rejecting.

brown is definitely looking for more than GPA, so don’t worry!

You’ve already heard back? Deferred. Well… my condolences. It sounds like you deserved an acceptance.
