I’ve posted here before, but to keep things simple I’m a typical CC student. Will have around a 3.77-8 gpa when applying to transfer, don’t have many EC’s besides Phi Theta Kappa and work experience. Horrid HS grades due to family issues and a 28 act. If I’m applying to transfer as a junior (I’ll have enough credits) do I stand a chance at places like Duke, UMich,USC,UNC, Syracuse? I match the avg transfer gpa for these schools but it just seems too easy…and everyone on this website is the president of some non profit so I don’t know how much of a chance I stand haha
Forgot to mention that need based aid is a huge factor. I chose these schools because of their large need based packages so if anyone knows of any other schools that have good information systems/business programs and would match up to me feel free to comment!
Can you re-take the ACT and try to do better? Your GPA is good but your ACT could be better
Duke’s transfer acceptance rate is 5% so that’s a pretty low chance no matter what.
I could retake it and do better for sure, I just wasn’t sure if that was necessary for transferring at some of these schools it’s all a bit confusing
I know usc doesn’t look at high school if you have 30 credits at time of application which I will. I’m sure duke would be an extreme reach no doubt, I’m just trying to name every school that would give me the aid I need, my parents can contribute about 2k a year I really can’t afford to take too much out in loans ://
It can be confusing. At some school it depends on how many units you have, or how many years ago you graduated from high school.
Duke definitely requires it
Syracuse does not if you’ve completed over 30 units (probably semester units). How many units have you completed?
And what’s your intended major?
I was just accepted to UMich for Fall 2017 school year as a transfer from another 4 year university (private). My college GPA was a 3.85 and I’ll have 57 units done by the end of this current spring semester (so junior transfer). My HS GPA was around a 3.65 UW and 3.78 weighted with an 1800/2400 SAT, so nothing extraordinary; also, my EC’s aren’t anything extravagant either. With a GPA of a 3.7+ and over 50 or 55 credits, I think you have a great chance at USC, Michigan, UNC and other transfer-friendly schools. Duke is hard for everyone so it seems like a crapshoot, but I would still apply anyways because you can’t be accepted if you don’t apply! Besides Michigan, I also applied to USC, UCLA and Stanford for Fall 2017. I’m not sure how financial aid is at most of the schools on your list, but Michigan usually gets a bad rep for their financial aid for transfer students especially those who are from out of state (like me), but I got my financial aid award today and they gave me a $38k in aid and then my parents are taking out a PLUS loan to cover their portion and they make over $120k a year, so we were pleasantly surprised with our award given our somewhat high income. In fact, the financial aid that we got from Michigan is actually better than the financial aid we are currently getting at the private university that I’ve been going to for the last 3 semesters. USC is a private school and same with Duke obviously, so I would assume that the financial aid at those schools would be better than the financial aid awards given out at most public schools. Good luck!!
I will have completed 34 at the time I’ll be applying! And I’m still kind of stuck between majors but information systems/business is what I’m looking at
No way congratulations! And yes with the track that I’m on I should have around 55-60 units when I finally do transfer. Would you mind giving me a general idea of the college classes you had taken at your previous school and your major? I’ve done Chem 101, 2 English classes, some humanities , psych and stats so far and I’m not sure if my classes are “advanced” enough to get in
If you’re going to be applying to a business major, some schools REQUIRE that you take classes before even applying. That normally means something like:
Financial Accounting
Managerial Accounting
Calculus I
Statistics
Micro-economics
Macro-economics
Make sure you take a look at the requirements of your ideal transfer schools because you might not qualify for them as of yet.
I know usc has some of those requirements but I haven’t looked into the others thanks for the heads up I’ll look into that more
Vanderbilt has 30% transfer acceptance rate, is ranked 15th on US News best colleges(I know we should take these rankings with a grain of salt, but they mean something) and gives amazing financial aid. They have a no loan policy and meet 100% of need. Which means they meet 100% of need without using loans. So its all in grants/scholarships and work study. Here is a link to an article explaining this and a list of other schools with this policy.
