I'm going to leave this kind of open ended. I just finished my sophomore year of high school and I expect to end junior year with about a 3.83 unweighted gpa, weighted probably around high 4.5/low 4.6. I am taking the most rigorous coursework possible, probably ending up with about 9 AP's. Expecting 6 B's total. 2250-2300 SAT. Pretty good extracurriculars, probably my "most notable" being performing piano at Carnegie hall. I plan to major in economics, double major with piano performance if possible. What schools should I be looking at? Thanks!

What is your budget ?

Carnegie Mellon University

Northwestern
Michigan
NYU
Duke
UCLA
Minnesota Twin-Cities (safety)

By NYU, did you mean Stern? Also, can you categorize the schools by safety, match, and reach?

I am not fully aware of my budget at this point, but based on little college talks with my parents here and there, money shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Sorry for the vagueness.

YOU can categorize them based on the same stats you provided here.

[CollegeData - College 411 - College Match](College Search & Match with our College Finder | CollegeData)

You seem to be assuming you should be focusing on the most selective schools that might admit someone with your stats. If that’s the case, then all possibilities are on the table. Your stats are high enough to give you a shot at admission to just about any school in the US News top 30, top 20, or even top 10 lists.

Any of the top 20 or so schools will still be reaches (as they are for virtually everyone). So if you are choosing schools based solely on selectivity, you need to broaden your search to at least the top 30 or so, just to cover reach and “match” schools. That’s assuming costs are not an issue at all.

Don’t you have any criteria other than selectivity? Nearly all those schools offer economics and music majors. Northwestern, Rice, and Oberlin have music schools/conservatories, but I’m not sure they allow students to double-major across school boundaries.

I understand that I need to choose “safety”, “match”, and “reach” schools. I just need guidance in categorizing which schools go in which category based on my stats. I would love to attend a university in New York, but really anywhere on the east coast (plus Pennsylvania maybe) is ideal, mainly because I just moved from the Midwest to the east and I really don’t want to go back out there. NYU Stern is probably my top choice at this point, but I’m not quite sure where that fits on my list…

I also have a pretty good story to tell for my essay, if that helps any.

The above colleges are probably some of the best fits for you. Also when you go to college interviews make sure to bring up your performance as that makes you different. Good luck :)

Wow - you are speculating your stats way to much to give a fair answer.

Just to clarify: if I double major, economics would be my main focus. In other words, I am most likely to pursue a career in the business field rather than in music- music is my lifelong passion.

I know I am speculating quite a bit. However, i believe my approximations are reasonable. I would like to see what colleges I should be aiming at at this point in my high school career. According to the stats I suggested, what colleges would be safety, match, and reach for me?

Why don’t you look them up at the link I provided? It will do that for you if you enter your stats.

I actually did that earlier today- and it was quite helpful! However, I would also like to hear some people’s opinions and thoughts.

Look at Williams, excellent economics, excellent music. Double majors are common. Many performance opportunities, even for non-majors.

If your stats turn out as you predict, virtually all the schools in the US News top 100 national universities and top 100 national LACs would be on the table. If you narrow it down to schools in the East with economics and music departments, we’re still probably talking about over 100 schools. Your “match” range (strictly according to stats, not budget or “fit”) would be approximately in the #26-50 range of either list. Most top ~25 (or so) schools would be reaches; anything below 50 (or so) probably is an admissions safety. Many of those schools are in the East, and virtually all of them have both economics and music departments.

Okay. I will look into the list and see if I can narrow it down. Based on my stats, what can I do out of academics to increase my chances at a “reach” college?

Bump 10char

Bump bump bump -.-
