Hey, I wanted to emphasize, DO NOT start any appeal letter without calling admissions first. Your objective should be to find the exact reason of denial and target that exactly. Do not write a half ass appeal letter “guessing” what is wrong, that is not only a waste of your time but is also fruitless in that it will probably result in more disappointment. MAKE SURE YOU CALL!!

Hi rybridges16, based on your school IGETC, http://www.laspositascollege.edu/facultystaff/documents/IGETCGEFlyer2012-2013.pdf

Life science is Area 5B: Biological Science; humanities is Area 3: Art and Humanities; and social science is Area 4: Social & Behavioral Science. Your chemistry courses are from Area 5A: Physical Science.

My friend with a 4.0 GPA/engineering major with all pre-req completed was also rejected from Berkeley but he got into UCLA so…

@HeatZz
Thanks for the advice. I will definetely make some phone calls on Monday.

@karduz
Thanks for clarifying that for me. Seems as if there may be short some GE courses. I will call to make sure and post back with what they tell me.

@wintergreeen
yea I would have been happy as a clam with just one or the other. I dont really care which. Just sucks that I was denied by both with such strong credentials

Hmm. This indeed is an interesting case. If you don’t mind, I would like to take a look at your personal statements. Your academics alone should have compelled them to admit you.

@AtypicalAsian
I would gladly PM my personal statements to you, but this site wont allow me to send PM’s until I have 15 posts. You can PM me your email address and I will paste my essays into an email for you. Or we can just wait until I hit 15. Almost there :)

Honestly the only reason you didn’t get in is because you’re a white male. The liberals at Berkeley, although they claim to have a holistic review system, are in fact very racist. The same thing happened to me for freshman decisions. I can prove this point with a short story.

My best friend, who is from Ethiopia, had almost the exact same stats as me. Biotechnology Career Academy, we won the state science fair together, we both played sports, and we had very high GPA’s. The differences between us were standardized test scores and difficulty of classes. Mine were simply much higher and harder. However, he managed to get accepted, while I was flat out denied. In fact two other white males, who in all honesty were even better qualified than I, also got rejected that year.

It’s a screwed up system man, not much you can do about it. Just move on and be successful elsewhere.

Sorry to hear that you didn’t get in. I tend to disagree with HeatzZ’s assumptions that essays/ec’s and pre. req’s have a little impact on admissions. Essentially, every year some people with nearly perfect GPA’s are denied admissions for individuals with significantly lower GPA. In my opinion, especially at UCLA or UCB your essay matters a lot. If u want i can take a quick and give you my honest in opinion. (GPA 3.6. Bus & Econ Major. Applied to all UC’s admitted to all, currently attending USC) and i don’t think they third year at a community college hurt you at all. Considering i know a lot of people that successfully transferred into UCLA or UCB after 4 years at CC. You should appeal the decision. I forget what are the requirements to do it. but good luck!

The only i can see that might of dinned you on is your course load. Every time i spoke to a transfer admission’s counselor, they told me they like to see upward trend matters and students that are always challenging their stuff via, more units or harder classes, etc… in that sense a 3.7 is just as good as a 4.0.

Thanks for the replies guys.

My parents thought the same thing. They say it is because I am white and because of all of the budget cuts. UCB and UCLA are accepting significantly more out of state/international students this year because of financial issues. It’s sad that our schools dont even have enough money to accommodate Californians.

@HelloG
I really appreciate you taking the time to review my essays. I will send them over as soon as I get 15 posts. Thanks again

@luc425
LMAO @ implying UCBs incredible 4% black admissions rate is the reason for your rejection. If anything, the UC’s are biased towards whites at the expense of asians.

Public universities in CA are barred from using race as a factor in admitting students. Your sob story, while heartbreaking, is purely anecdotal and unfortunately does little to prove anything.

@rybridges16, do you think I could take a look at your email too? I sent you a pm with my email.

i agree with Slowdive, i highly doubt your race or ethnicity has anything to do with the reason why u didnt get in.

I have 15 posts now. I am sending out PMs to everyone who requested my essays. Thanks for taking the time to help out!

@rybridges16

Please pm me your essay, E.C List, Volunteer. I would love to share my input as well, it doesn’t look like you should of been rejected to UCLA.

I don’t have 15 posts therefore I cant PM however please email me at sr90gg@ gmail dot com as well as EC or anything else in your application. My friend got in to UCB with a 3.6 same major and missing 2 pre reqs. This puzzles me! This is not right!

Also, when the school system got sued some time in the 90s they can not admit you according on race nor gender. They dont even have the ability to look at your last name, you’re just a number to them.

@rybridge16, I sent you my critique of your essays.

sat score??
