Next year I'll be taking AP World History and AP Biology, and hopefully AP English (Literature or Composition or whatever it is), along with all my other academic classes being honors, two school publications, and with being a member of a competitive sport team which practices everyday after school.

Is it too much? I don't want to end up failing a class or bombing the exams, or having to quit swimming.

I also talked to my guidance counselor about taking English 2 Honors over the summer and going into AP English for my sophomore year, but they said I couldn't do that and gave me a BS reason. They can't deny me, right? There are people that take math classes over the summer and are ahead once they get to school; why is it any different in English? If all comes to worse, I can have my parents sign off on a paper to get me in?

^Maybe it’s just not allowed and get over it?

You will be fine. Most people take 6 or 7 AP classes sophomore year and can still manage.

You can’t take English or History classes outside of school because not only are they 4- year graduation requirements (entire duration of high school) for the school but also for the state and country.

BTW AP English LANGUAGE/Composition = Grade 11 and AP English LITERATURE/Composition = Grade 12. If you don’t do AP Language before AP Literature you will not understand anything because in Literature you are analyzing texts based on literary devices which are taught in AP Language.

Just do English 2 honors next year geez…your counselor is NOT BSing

You can do MATH & SCIENCE but not ENGLISH & HISTORY
why math & science? because most schools such as yours only require 1 or 2 years of it in high school so the school gives the students option to do some outside of school to advance or the school might not offer it.

lol APWH is hard. im serious it’s one of those “dying classes.”

AP Bio is alright.

Almost nobody takes that many AP classes sophomore year, and only a very few take that many tests. In my school, we only have 6 periods anyway and then another reserved for religion.

@the OP: No, you can’t do the same for English because English is not a concrete subject like Math or Science, where the are specific prerequisites. It shouldn’t be very hard to understand. I don’t think anyone takes AP English sophomore year. Just take it junior year; there’s only one more English class after that anyway (AP Lit).

“You can’t take English or History classes outside of school because not only are they 4- year graduation requirements (entire duration of high school) for the school but also for the state and country.”

I have no idea what “TRUFFLIEPUFF” means by that. Why can’t I take an honors English on FLVS (Florida Virtual School)? I don’t see why not.

“Bobtheboy,” there are tons of people at my school that take 7 AP classes in a year (including sophomores). I don’t know what kind of school you do to, but mine is nationally recognized.

I believe I am allowed. I was told I wasn’t allowed to take AP Biology because I hadn’t taken chemistry before, but guess what, I am, and I know people that have taken biology first, too.

It’s one more than me, and I did better than I expected, so you’ll do just fine or even better. And it’s easier to elect to advance in math since it’s an objective subject with courses that can be taken as you master previous courses. English is more subjective, and it’s best if you take it with your age group. Besides, I believe there’s some nationwide education mandate that requires students to do English throughout four years of schooling.

^^ OH you mean that type of school. i thought you meant a community college. hmm well you can discuss that with the principal not the counselor because the principal can search up district guidelines on online high school credits.

With that national English 4-year mandate thing, if it exists, I can still do that. English 1 Honors freshman year, AP Language/Composition sophomore year, AP Literature/Composition, and then for senior year something like English 3 or 4 or whatever is available. Plus it’d give me a break from all the other APs I’ll be taking senior year.

You’re probably better off taking AP Language/Composition junior year and AP Literature/Composition senior year. Taking English 3 or 4 Honors in senior year seems kinda, well, weird and I don’t know how favorably that will be looked upon for college admissions.

AP Language and Composition is based more on skills than knowledge. I don’t know how strong/weak your English background is, but it might help to take English 2 Honors throughout sophomore year to hone certain skills. A few months in the summertime probably won’t suffice.

What was the so-called “BS reason”?

goddamnit just do AP Language in 11thgrade and Literature in 12th damn

Damn TRUFFLIEPUFF is being really provocative damn damn damn DAMN.

Chill. Please. I asked for advice, opinions, thoughts, etc, not a forceful reply telling me what to do.

@xxrunningonempty, the BS reason pertaining as to why I was refused was “because you can’t.” Convincing, isn’t it?

Lol what Truffliepuff said.
English is kinda like a knowledge acquired over time and improved on. It’s not memorization like science or history. Your subjective thinking skills improve over time, you can’t just change it in one summer.
AP World and Bio are perhaps some of the most tiring APs. So think of it this way, less essays to write and work to do if you don’t have AP Eng. :)

I have a friend who was “really advanced” in English so she took AP Lang soph year instead of junior year. However, now for credit, since she already took AP Lit this year, she has to go back to honors college English. You can decide if that’s worth it to you…

I understand the whole subjective English thing, but we do virtually nothing in English classes that aren’t AP. We read books or whatever. Then we do projects on them. For crying out loud, we read a book my class read back in seventh grade (I’m a freshman). I don’t want to waste a year doing that again, especially when I can get more APs since everything is so competitive nowdays.

Does taking an honors class your senior year look bad or something? Do colleges even notice? Don’t they just see what APs you took and all that jazz? What are the implications of taking an honors during senior year?

5 million APs =/= college of your dreams

tryandsucceed - you MUST get 4 credits of english either way. Even if you take AP earlier, you still need the credits! They will make you go back to a less-advanced English which will be quite a bore for you after AP (I would think).

@rainbowrose, I’d still get the required 4 credits. I would just go from AP to honors in senior year, but the question is does that really matter, and if so, how so and why?

Lol. Colleges see everything you do in high school. Going to an easier class is seen as laziness.

Besides, why are you wanting to take an AP English before having taken at least Eng. III anyway? It makes no sense to not go ahead and take English III before going on to AP Englishes unless your trying to impress someone your sophomore year.
