3 AP classes too overwhelming? I am planning to take AP Bio, AP Stats, and AP US History as a junior

Aside from the three classes I mentioned above, I will also be taking honors pre calc and English 11 honors. I will be taking a regular physics class and two college art classes. Does anyone think these classes are manageable? In the past, I’ve taken AP Human Geo freshman year and AP world history sophomore year. I am not in any extra curricular; I am considering a health club. Anyways, does anyone have any tips for managing three ap classes? Are the AP classes a good balance aside from my other classes? How hard is each AP class (What exactly will I be doing in each class?)
Thank you so much friends for your help.

At my school, 3 APs junior year is usually what most of the high achievers take. The highest of achievers (usually about 5-10 students, me being one of them) take 4 APs junior year. Seeing as you’ve taken APs before and (i assume) did well, 3 APs should definitely be manageable. Here’s what each class is like at my school:

AP Bio - As a science AP, this class is going to be full of work and the material is going to be difficult. This will probably be your hardest class, so be ready to put a lot of time into it.

APUSH - I took APUSH this past year, and while nothing was really hard to understand or apply, there is a lot you need to know and remember. There will be a lot of work and essays, so be prepared for that. Take notes and put in the effort to study a bunch, and you’ll be fine.

AP Stats - I took this as a sophomore, and it was one of the easier APs I’ve taken. The work wasn’t nearly as much as most of my other APs, but it did get difficult at certain points (I hate linear regression lol). It shouldn’t be too bad, especially if you’re strong in the math department.

Overall, these 3 APs should be very manageable. You’ve got a good balance with one that’s hard, one that’s just a lot, and then one that’s not too bad at all. Since you’re not doing many extra curriculars, you should have the time to manage it all. Just don’t slack or fall behind. Good luck!

Bio & physics in the same year?

No EC’s?

What level of college are you aiming for?

AP Stats was super easy for my daughter. APUSH had a ton of reading and writing at her school. I think it’s doable. 3 APs junior year was standard for the top 10% at my daughter’s school too.

you’re fine. I’m taking 5 and self studying for 1. I am also going into junior year.

It depends on how APs are taught at your school and what you feel comfortable with. If it gets to be too much after the first couple of weeks, do you have the option to create a revised schedule that is just a tad less rigorous?

That being said, sounds do-able to me based on my daughter’s experience and that of her friends. IIRC, her junior year APs were language, psych, physics, and stats. She also took Human Geo freshman year, but took APUSH as a sophomore. APUSH is probably more demanding than psych, but even with four APs, junior year wasn’t a big stretch for her. Like @momofsenior1 said, that’s probably a typical course load for the top 10% of students at our local high school (and we’re just a regular suburban high school, nothing special).

So glad you posted! I was wondering the same thing last year at this time (what the heck have I gotten myself into?!) but I don’t regret it at all. I took AP Bio, AP Stats, and AP Language and Composition. I also took Honors Physics, Honors French, and Honors Pre-Calc. Although at some points I found my course load a little overwhelming, I am so glad I took those classes.

AP Statistics required a lot of writing and graphing calculator skills. The people who really excelled were meticulous in their work so they didn’t miss key steps that they needed to provide a complete answer (this will make more sense once you start doing problems). I’m not sure what you want to do for college, but having a base in statistics is pretty essential.

AP Biology is the light of my life. I savored every second in this class. Okay… this is just me being a nerdy freak, BUT if you liked any sort of biology you have taken in the past, it is just that in more depth. This required minimal math and good concise writing skills. It’s a lot of information but is never dull like stats is sometimes.

I can’t speak to APUSH but my friends who have taken it have had an okay time. I’ve heard it is a LOT of reading, but if you like history, you should be just fine (I am not a history buff so probably would have cried myself to sleep if I took this class).

If you have a strong work ethic (or plan to develop one) and are interested in the topics you listed, you should be just fine. Let me know if you have any follow up questions, and good luck!

You should save AP stats for senior year and tie a foreign language.
Beside this, your schedule looks reasonably challenging.
Get involved in more activities and stick with the ones you like because even if you’re only applying to your state flagship’s, colleges will expect some activities. (working/earning money, taking care of siblings…also counts)

I’d be more concerned about the college level art classes. One of my roommates in college took an art class, and spent more time on it than any other class.

Three APs is the typical high-performer junior course load at my kid’s school.

3 to 4 APs is pretty normal for an 11th grader who is smart and ambitious. You probably could have added AP Lang and it still would be ok. But yes, those art classes could easily sap up all your time.

AP Bio is hard but manageable, AP Stats is relatively easy, and APUSH is average in terms of work. The other question is what are you going to take as a 12th grader?

Why AP Stats? Why not pre-calc?

OP is taking honors pre-calc per the first post. They’re doubling up on both science and math.

Senior year I plan on just taking AB Calculus and AP chemistry. To comment on what others asked about what I want to major in; I’m thinking of pharmacy!

Thank you to all who replied! This has made me feel less stressed  have a good day!

I’m also just aiming for a college in my state that offers a pharmacy program… I’m not going big and applying to an Ivy League lol. I just find some ap classes interesting (I want to take 7 in all my years of high school) and I will be doing HOSA (health club) along with maybe doing a service club (NHS). Thank you again for telling me your thoughts!!

From what I’ve heard around my high school, those are considered the “easy APs” (no such thing). I would say, based on my experiences, APUSH would probably be the toughest course. All we did was exams, notes, and essays (but my teacher knew how to lighten things up and make it far less stressful). That said, the courses are manageable, and they also make you look well-rounded to colleges, which is good for students not going to the Ivies. You shouldn’t do too badly in those classes, just make sure to study hard for APUSH and Bio.
