Okay, CCers, straight to the point. Is it logical to apply to schools with selectivities similar to that of HYPSM? Two Bs were in 9th, 1 in 10th. All math/science classes but they were like high Bs. Unluckily, MIT is my first choice. Similar to most, I don't expect anything positive, however, is it somehow realistic for me to still think I can possibly get in? Seems like such a silly question and I rewrote this like five times, but I still feel more assured with another's opinions/experiences. THIS ISN'T A CHANCE THREAD, just a random question that's been fluttering around my thoughts. T H A N K S !!

If the rest of your application is up to par I don’t think that would be out of the question. Assuming from what you say that you are getting As in harder classes. Freshman year is not all that important.

MIT itself says that your grades don’t need to be straight As. They just shouldn’t be an alphabet soup and you shouldn’t be able to spell words with them!

That doesn’t necessarily mean you have a good shot, but it probably won’t be determined by what you just described.

Ahhh!! I’m an upcoming Junior and I won’t get any Bs but I kinda slacked sophomore year … Not sure how badly it’ll affect me but I’d say the rest of my app is up to par if anything.

Thanks!! Well, truth be told no one has a good shot at MIT lol.

Are those B’s for a quarter, semester or full year’s credit?
I’ll assume a “worst case scenario”, where each B is multiplied by a full year’s credit (3 credits out of an estimated 18 (6 academic classes a year for 9, 10, 11)) and the rest of your transcript is A’s, your UW GPA should still be around 3.83. That GPA would not knock you out of contention for HYPMS.
Of course, you need great SAT/ACT and all the rest of the package to get in, but those B’s don’t make it impossible.

It honestly depends on the rest of your application. Only a few Bs will academically qualify you for MIT, but, that means the rest of your application has to be better than the people that have no Bs, which honestly, won’t be easy.

Year grades sadly
My UW by applications should be like a 4.5ish…

Ahh, true. I think I’d have a pretty above average application, most likely because I wouldn’t just stuff a resume like most overachievers or CCers would do. Not the gunner type lol.

If I don’t get anything less than perfect ideal MIT grades from now on, get perfect scores on standardized test and so forth, I should be “academically qualified” to adcoms right?
