Yale
Wesleyan
UCONN

@Alex7592:
USAFA

those would be my other two.

MD-
Univ of MD - College Park
Johns Hopkins
Naval Academy

“I’m confident that Wake Forest is considerably more well-known than whatever 3rd school (beyond Michigan, MSU) that you dredge up for Michigan.”

IBClass06: Yeah you noticed that too didn’t you? You see even I am realistic when it comes to people’s perceptions. Ask the average man on the street about Wake Forest and he’ll think it’s loaded with trees. The lack of name recognition also applies to Wesleyan in CT and a myriad of other schools that so many here on CC think are very well known.

NYU
Columbia
Syracuse

I’d say for Ohio the most well known (due to sports) are probably:
Ohio State
Xavier
U Of Cincinnati

Well, I’m not going to disagree with that.

The OP simply asked for the 3 schools that “everyone knows,” though. I personally interpreted this as asking which 3 schools in each state are the most well-known. Most people know Duke and Carolina, and it’s fairly safe to safe that Wake is probably the most well-known nationally after that. In-state I would say NC State has much more name recognition.

(Also, I’m surprised to see House put Syracuse on the list. I had heard of Cornell while growing up in the South long before I ever heard of Syracuse.)

Any college sports fan will have heard of Wake Forest. Perhaps not for our excellent academics, but I really have not met many people who have not heard of Wake Forest and I live in New Jersey.

rjkofnovi apparently has some sort of vendetta against Wake Forest University, because it is a recurring theme in posts I see.
You should visit, I am confident you will love it! PM me if you want more details if you perhaps want to transfer.

^^^Not at all. I’m just saying that it’s not a household name across the United States. I know it’s a great school and I’m sure it’s campus is beautiful. IMO It’s just not a name that everyone knows, hence the title of this thread.

North Carolina-
UNC
Duke
App State (solely because of their win at Michigan a few years ago)

"University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
Minnesota State University
…

most of the LACs are known in the other parts of the country but no one in state cares about them"

Only top students who can’t make it to the Ivies, Stanford, MIT+Duke, care about top LACs such as Carleton and Macalester.

In Michigan I’d say the three best known schools in NC are

UNC
Duke
Appalachian State

;-)

UNC because of the national title game against Michigan State, Duke because Michigan beat them in basketball this year, and App State because of what happened at the big house few years ago?

Michigan is looking nice this year. They’re probably my third favorite football team besides UNC and Syracuse (don’t laugh).

Arkansas:

U Arkansas
…second college that someone might have heard of on CC is Hendrix College.
Not sure if we have more than 2 colleges in the state.

i agree with second post, LOL most females/people not interested in college footbll dont know uscal. You realize theres a uscarolina too right? It would probably go UCLA, stanford, berkley(if you say CAL BEARS)

I’m going to be shot for some of these

Mass:
Harvard
MIT
BC

NY:

Virginia:

Pennslyvania:

Villinova

Florida:
Flordia
Flordia State
UMiami

Texas:
Texas
A&M
Texas Tech

California:
Cal
USC
UCLA

Indiana:
Notre Dame
Indiana
Purdue

Illinois:
Illinois
Northwestern
Chicago

People may have heard of Columbia, but evidently they can’t spell it correctly. 2 of the 3 people who included it spelled it Colombia.

As far as not knowing of certain schools, a thread a few years ago described it best: a woman in the south (I believe Fla) who was very familiar with elite southern academic institutions, such as Vandy, Duke, Wake, UNC, ect. said everything when she said someone her daughter knew was talking about Villanova. She thought it was some new kind of northern cookie… everyone has their own perspective, just depends on where you are looking from…

Georgia;
Emory
UGA
Georgia State

Penn would definitely be over Pitt. You have so many spelling mistakes in that entire post. Villinova? Colombia? Flordia? Pennslyvania? Cmon…

GSU over GA Tech? idk about that…
