University of Michigan
Michigan State University
Western Michigan University

Nooooooooo Central over Western for sure :)

Not at all, though Central is popular, just not as the three:
University of Michigan
Michigan State University
Western Michigan University

Well Central beat MSU, so I guess lately it’s more well known. Also because everyone loves Dan Lefevour.

for Maine: Colby, Bowdoin, and Bates

I’ll be highly surprised if anyone disagrees

Va-
uva
w&m
vt

I mean, if you ask someone from California or someone from Massachusetts what colleges they know from Mississippi, I don’t think you’ll get any legitimate answers. But as for regional name recognition (in TN, AK, TX, LA, AL, etc.), I would say:

University of Mississippi (Ole Miss)
Mississippi State University
Millsaps College

For what it’s worth, I do distinctly remember that one time when I first posted here asking for search help, someone said something to the extent of: “For your safety school, you should just apply to the University of Mississippi (if it exists).” Haha.

Yes, we institutions for higher education in Mississippi.

Everyone in OHIO knows…

Ohio State University
University of Michigan (the sworn enemy)
The local community college

I would say that probably Ohio University is probably fourth-best known for its raunchous party atmosphere (show up on Halloween sometime and you’ll see what I mean)

Well I’d imagine Miami University is known pretty well because of Big Ben. Miami also has the greatest coaching network in college football.

*Honorable Mention:
University of Dayton (private)
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (public)

^^^ If I showed that to the Xavier and UC fans I know, they’d be very upset :P

My list was not just a bball popularity contest!! Even Denison, Ohio Wesleyan University, College of Wooster, Baldwin-Wallace, Antioch…etc. that I believe are academically more superior than Xavier did not make my list of top- 3 in each category due to OP’s request!!! In terms of academic reputation outside of Ohio, Xavier is #10 at best if both public and private liberal arts colleges are included!!! So far as I am concerned for U. of Cincy, only the recently incorporated Cinncinnati Conservatory of Music - part of U. of Cinncinnati is worth noting nationally. Sorry!!..

p.s. I mentioned U. of Dayton for the purpose of “up-and-coming” for the future! :)

UC has some other great departments like their geography department.

I am sure UC has a few respectable programs as do most 3rd & 4th tier schools; however, overall speaking (especially outside of Ohio), UC is seen not much different academically to that of Akron, Kent State, Toledo and Bowling Green State. I don’t mean to be mean, but OP’s request for this thread selection is regulated at 3 spots!

Well the D-I schools are more well known than Kenyon, Oberlin and CWRU.

well, colleges are not department stores or restaurant chains. Many if not most tend to associate colleges with academics more so than sports! And even if my subjective ratings don’t make sense, I am excused (especially on CC), because I am an Asian! Nite Guys!~ :)

p.s. Among Asian communities, CWRU is definitely more well known than D-1 schools such as Toledo, Akron, UCinn, BG, CMU, EMU, WMU or even Miami -Oxford for that matter. Why? Because their parents never heard of them, too! :P

hmm for california i have to say:
UC Davis
Sac State
UC Berkeley

You guys have to realize that athletics bring a tad bit more attention to colleges than academic elitism. So the most academically oriented schools may not always be the most well known. This is why UNC is put above Duke and Syracuse is put above Cornell. All four schools are great but as you can see Duke and Cornell garner the most academic prominence but because Syracuse and UNC’s athletics are hardcore, their names actually ring more bells.

P.S. I thought we were posting schools for our state only. I don’t know why people are speaking on behalf of 2, 3, 4 other states unless they’ve lived at more than one state.

How could Bowdoin, Bates, and Colby be more widely known than the U of Maine?

People in Maine have a very odd sense of how much people know about their state. I recall in my freshman year at a college in Massachusetts, people were introducing themselves, and this one guy said he was from Brewer, Maine. Somebody said “I never heard of it.” And he replied, “It’s near Bangor.” OK, THAT cleared it up. The guy from Maine immediately got the nickname “Bangor.”

I went to high school and undergrad in Mass., and you’d be amazed how little most people there know about the excellent smaller schools in the state. Everybody knows Harvard, MIT, BC, BU, UMass, Holy Cross, (maybe) Wellesley and a lot of the small state schools (eg, Bridgewater State College). But Williams, Amherst, Tufts, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Clark???

The people I knew in Mass. generally didn’t like UMass, but many seemed to love the U of New Hampshire and the U of Vermont.

ND

NDSU
UND
