3 C's and an A in Fall Semester=Epic Fail!

Hi,

So I'm a transfer student and I would really like to know my chances of getting into UCSB. This is my dream school and although I applied to many other schools I'm really wishing to get into this one.

My Info:

Major: Film/Media Studies
-G.P.A 3.1 (was 3.5 but this semester I got 3 C's and an A)
-Done with both English classes and the one required math class. Will be done with IGETC by Spring.
-I've been in school since last Winter and will still take classes this Winter and spring. So this means I've only had 4 weeks out of school for this whole year.
-I'm an African American Female (I don't know if this really matters, but I don't think it's a a lot of African American girls in my major).
-I did a TAG but I got that letter that didn't explain anything about my TAG being approved.
-I did volunteer work with movie, music and TV award shows, also a few films. I also do volunteer work through my school. I worked lots of jobs was even manager of an AT&T store.
-My essays were really really good. I explained my situation in the third prompt, to why my grades at my first school (lbcc) were not so good.

My main worry is that my Fall grades are bad- A (in Mass Comm) C (in Foreign Film) C (Psych Critical Thinking) & C (in Stats). This was my last chance to prove to the school that I was making an improvement. Now when Fall grades are due I'm afraid it might affect any chance of me getting in.

any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You & Merry Christmas.

If the Fall 2009 Statfinder numbers still mean anything, you’ve got a little over 50% right now with the lower GPA. The “Visual And Performing Arts” department (as it’s labeled on Statfinder) seems to put a very low emphasis on your GPA since they had a relatively even distribution of admits for the 2.6 - 4.0 range with no apparent cutoff which seems to me indicates that they weight other topics more heavily, this means that volunteer work in media, if you mentioned it, is key to getting accepted.

Thanks, I’m going to look at it right now. That really helps a lot.

where can i find this stat finder?

@raacheeel [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/)

Just so you know UCSB doesn’t read the essays or the ECs part for transfers students, a 3.1 should be good, and did you TAG, last I checked (this was a year ago though), you only needed a 2.7 for UCSB.

oh nvm, I just saw the TAG thing, yeah you should be good, I didnt get a letter from SB approving my TAG either when I applied.

Don’t worry, you passed all your classes and while your GPA dipped down a bit, I believe you’re in. As CalBearGuy said UCSB isn’t as stringent as other UC’s with admissions so since you’re still above 3.0 and on track to complete IGETC along w/relevant pre-reqs, no worries here IMO

:) Good luck and Happy New Year 2011!

I got a C in stats as well. Arghh. Math! lol

But I think you’re still looking good for admission, IGETC will be done, you seem well rounded with work experience and EC’s display a sincere interest in the major. =]

Did anyone else get the vague TAG letter from UCSB? I hear it’s actually two letters -one saying a person seems to not be qualified for tag & the other one (the one I received) saying wait and see tell March-April.

& Thanks Everyone for the help & hope you guys have an awesome New Years!

I wouldn’t call this “EPIC FAIL”, I’d call it “EPIC PASS!”

Remember this whenever you get a C - at least you passed! The teacher gave you a C not because you were a failure, but because they thought you deserved to pass the class and comprehended the material well enough to not have to do it again.

In terms of UCSD to they look at how you improved? coz i did really well this semester so and yeah i wanna know if they even consider it lol

^ well they definitely look at your fall grades, because at UCSD they supposedly don’t read TAGs or apps until the January update goes in too. Those grades must count for something, maybe to show the school that you aren’t slacking once your app was submitted or something.
