So apparently there's 3 versions of the deferral letter? What are they, and what do they mean? And if anyone has any statistics of how many deferred people were later admitted to Michigan, that would be great.

whAt do u mean three versions? mine went like this:

Dear Briana:

We have carefully considered your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2013. Given our surging application volume and very strong credentials of our applicants, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this years freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2013.

Please refer to the website www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred for FAQs about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available and be sure your U-M ID is on the material. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

That’s the one I got briana.

Dear XXXXXX:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2013. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2013.

Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

Sincerely,

I got the same as professional. What does it mean that there are different ones?

Dear YoloKing:

Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2013. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu. If your counselor sent the initial School Report for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2012-2013 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at 734-936-0740.

NOTE
I got this e-mail with a 3.2 overall unweighted GPA, VERY strong trend (Straight A’s junior year) and a subpar 28 ACT score if that helps.

Good luck all

Guys, I wouldn’t look too much into it. At the end of the day, it is a deferral. People with all the letters will be accepted/denied and I don’t think they’re sending you some sort of cryptic message. My guess is that you receive a different decision based on the school you applied to.

“People with all the letters will be accepted/denied and I don’t think they’re sending you some sort of cryptic message”

Then why have differences at all?

I’m not going to concern myself with it overmuch; there’s not much I can do to change the results of the application at this point besides bust it over the next month to get great semester 1 grades.

At the same time, I find it curious that they would send out three different versions of what you so rightly said is the same thing: a deferral.

getting defered sucks

I don’t mean to overanalyze things, but the tone in each of the letters are clearly very different. The first one and second one are similar, but the second one is much more positive overall. The third one (which I got) has an obvious emphasis on fall semester grades.

Yeah… my impression is that #2 is the most positive/optimistic and favorable. The tone in each letter is quite different.

You guys should consider the possibility that the different deferrals are also based on what college you applied to. I think one of the three is for LSA deferrals, one is for CoE, and the other might possibly be for one or all of the other colleges (A&D, Music, etc.).

^ Nope, I went through the letters with some of my friends and we all got #2 even though they applied to CoE and I applied to LSA.

All - this is discussed and analyzed YEAR after YEAR. The differences mean absolutely nothing. Look at last year’s thread on this if you have time to waste.

Wayne, could you link to that thread, I cannot find it.

Cof2013: It’s the other thread about the three types of deferral letters on the main page.

I got a different letter for the college of engineering than professional.:

“Cof2013: It’s the other thread about the three types of deferral letters on the main page.”

? I don’t see anything. If it’s from this year and you’re trying to use it as evidence the letters don’t mean anything, that’s laughable. The 2010 thread was inconclusive. I’ll keep looking, but I would appreciate a link because I’m a little lost here.

My uncle works for the university of Michigan, I got deferred, and received the “we are impressed with your achievements” letter.

From what I understand, there IS a difference depending on the letter received.

There is a “good,” “medium,” and “bad” letter, although in previous years, applicants have been admitted as well as rejected with all three letters. The rankings are as follows:

“Good” letter: Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan ____ for Fall 2013. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

“Medium:” We have carefully considered your application to the University of Michigan _____ for Fall 2013. Given our surging application volume and very strong credentials of our applicants, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

“Bad:” Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan.
This may not be true, just the information I’ve gathered from reading several threads, from this year and past years.

I received the “good” letter, 31 act, 8 APs, 1990 SAT, 3.75 unweighted, 4.8 weighted, president of Spanish honor society (I’m Jewish and nonhispanic), vp of service club, good essays, pretty good rec letters, lots of community service, much expressed interest.

Hope this helps. Good luck everyone!

@mollbex:

1) Why don’t you just ask your uncle if there is a difference? Seems like he would know.
2) That’s an awfully generalizing statement to make (that there is a difference based on “past threads”). Do you have actual data to back that claim?
