"3 of 1 foreign language"

i found this on the cornell web, this the requirement for CAS, does this mean applicants must have 3 credits in 1 language? i just want this clarified, thx

what's the website addy?

I was under the impression that, yes, you should have taken three years of foreign language in high school at least. You can write a letter explaining why you haven't met the requirement though. But,my alumni interviewer said that you'd be at a severe disadvantage if you hadn't taken enough foreign language because you have to take it at Cornell (or maybe only for CAS?)

I think the foreign language requirement at Cornell for the College of Arts and Sciences is that in order to graduate you either have to:
1) Pass a 200-level Spanish course (these are usually 3 credits) or
2) Start up a new language from scratch and take at least 11 credits worth of classes within that language

I certainly hope my interpretation is right because I'm in CAS and I took Spanish 209 as a freshman (after taking a very hard placement exam). I don't plan to take any more foreign language classes.

wait, so there isn't an entrance requirement in a 3rd language? also, wat if i am already fluent in 2 languages, but with only 1 year in a third language? how will that look?

yeah norcal is right for the most part at least.

3 years of 1 HS language is required for CAS, or 2 each of 2 languages.

Cornell CAS told me they like incoming freshmen to have 4 years of HS language though, and that I shouldn't drop Spanish.

Sorry, didn't realize you guys were talking about required high school foreign language courses. I was talking about what you have to do once you're at Cornell (which is to take one 200-level foreign language course or take 11 credits in a new language).

I took 4 years of Spanish in high school but did not take the AP class nor the AP test which is why I had to take the placement test during orientation to get into Spanish 209 at Cornell. There is no requirement for a third language. Just that you took 3 years of foreign language in HS.

3 of 1 or 2 of 2 i think actually...

but i am international, i imigrate to canada when i was 12, so i am fluent in my own language as well as english, however, i didn't do a second language in school. what should i do? will this ruin my chance big time?

Have your GC write a letter explaining your situation...I don't think you're like automatically rejected because of it or anything like that.

you are just supposed to write letters explaining any deficiencies; if theres a legit. reason, you won't be disadvantaged.
