In order to get into the "reach" colleges, e.g. Johns Hopkins, Stanford and the Ivies, will I need 2 SAT II subjects or 3? I'm doing the new SAT this fall... Just slightly confused with the sites' description, since I'm not sure if they're talking about the new or the old SAT system.

If you actually plan to apply to all those then you should probably do three. Beginning for applicants who are applying for 2006 entry, Hopkins will no longer require II's but instead "recommends" 3; Stanford likewise does not require them but recommends 2. Both of those also recommend that one of them be math level 2. Harvard, Yale and Princeton continue to require 3; other ivies 2, except I don't know if Penn has decided yet.

I am interested in this as well since I am applying to Rice Early Decision. They only say take two in the area you want to major. So my question is would it look better to take several and just send them all in or is it better to stick to what they tell you?

All I know is that Yale and Chicago and JHU is recommending (or asking) 3 subject tests. Typically, it's one MATH, one SCIENCE, and one subject of your choice.

From the colleges I'm interested in (Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown, Amherst, etc.), only Yale and Princeton require 3 SAT II's. The others mentioned require two. I may have read it wrong, but I thought it was a requirement as opposed to a request.

this list http://www.compassprep.com/admissions_req_subjects.aspx will clear up a lot of confusion.

on the question of is it better to send more than what's required, I would say absolutely, if they are good scores.
