Do you think this would be ok or over the top?
I have three teachers who would each provide DIFFERENT insights about me, so do you think it's ok if I send colleges 3 instead of two?

Thats exactely what I'm planning to do but instead my extra is going to be from my job supervisor; some colleges I researched did say that outside rec. will help so

i'll probably get a rec from my employer too. 3 teachers might be too much, but if you're sure all 3 would show different aspects of yourself, then i guess its fine

there's no reason that you need 3 teacher recs. There is one exception though. Say you want to get into harvard divinity school, although religion typically is not considered an academic subject, you could submit a rec from a religion teacher in addition to the 2 core.

in some cases three reccomendations can be kind of boring. think about the stacks and stacks of applications and reccomendations the admissions commitee have to read each day. I heard some read about 20-50 applications a day. Do you think you want to inundate them with more to read?. I might re-consider sending athird rec I don't know it depends

Some colleges may penalize you for sending more than two unless its specifically stated in their policy that they accept one supplemental.

why would they penolize you? If it wasn't asked for then just ignore it or throw it away or something. having to use that against the applicant seems kind of harsh.

Because most schools explicitly state they only want two recommendations. Most schools would interpret sending more recs. as you not being able to follow simple directions when applying to their school.

ok I checked the website for the school I was wondering about and under special circumstances it is possible to send three recommendation letters.
Fortunately for me, what I had in mind is that special circumstance :)
Thanks anyway

At the MIT info session in our hometown, the guy said to send in as many as you want, but if they start seeing recs from the mailman, they are going to get annoyed with you.

haha.....who gets a reccomendation from the mailman???......it must be a mailman that delivers mails to the colleges then.....Rence; thats very true......i geuss it is considered as not following directions..

Recs aren't extremely important and you don't need more than 2, seriously.
