<p>I just don't get this sentence. Could someone please explain it to me?</p>

<li><p>Think about the meaning of the sentence. In other words, what provoked the flood condemnations? The answer is of course the contrast in wealth. This sentence requires noun, not a verbal phrase, and so (E) is not correct.</p></li>

<li><p>Well first off, you can eliminate (B), (C), and (D), as they do not fulfill the idiomatic expression “less … than”. (D) also contains the incorrect tense.</p></li>

<p>(A) is redundant because of the use of “lesser”.</p>

<p>-I realize my explanation aren’t very clear, so it’d be great if someone can provide their own rationale.</p>
