Hello, I am attending CC in California, My major is computer science and i would like to do a minor in math. (Also English is my second language).
This semester, i made a mistake and i didn’t register for my major class. I took Political science, Econ 1, Conceptual physic ( late add so i can have more than 12 units), english 93. This semester is not a good semester for me. I went to depression and lost a job too. Since English is not my first language, it is hard to play the catch up. So i needed to withdraw my class.
I ended up with 3 W’s this semester ( which sounds ugh more me). I just started and i need at least 4 more semester to transfer out ( i need to take more English courses than native speakers). This is my 3 semester
My GPA now is 3.88
it will be 3.66 after this semester with an B in English 93
I know it happened and all i can do is try my best in the future. I try to think positive but it is a big scar and it is haunted
I am wondering that what are the chances for me to transfer to UC with a computer science major?
My priority school is UCSC, my second choice is SJ state ( which is quite competitive for the major)
Thanks all
Ws are acceptable. It was not a mistake not to take a major prereq. Keep your GPA up, especially in your major prereqs. Good luck!
@lupinlupito It sounds like this is your first semester? You can still bring your GPA up a huge amount, the Ws don’t matter. What you need to focus on is getting your English at a higher level. It’s OK if it takes a bit longer. It will not upset your game plan. Juts make sure that you take any ESL in the right order and especially not after the college level English. I mean, you can, but you won’t get credit. And only so many ESL courses transfer, so keep that in mind as you add up your units.
This is my 3rd semester, the first 2 semester, i took Math, ESL and college success classes. I withdrew 3 classes this semester with 3Ws. I am done with ESL, after this semsester, i still have 3 more English classes. Thank you
I agree with @lindyk8, your English written language skills will impact you, so increase your exposure to written language.
@“aunt bea” I saw an article about you recently.
really? Is that the old one about CC?
Well, I don’t know if it was old, but it was about CC. It mentioned BrownParent too.
Sorry, @ LupinLupito ;;), we didn’t mean to go off thread! My bad. Just make sure you practice your English written language skills. (“My bad” isn’t correct English usage, but its used as a “social convention” for latin’s “mea culpa” where “I messed up”.)

You have a high GPA. UCs do not care whatsoever about W’s. If you complete all of your major requirements and keep your GPA high, then I’m sure you’ll get into UCSC. Probably other schools, as well. I don’t know much about the CSU system.
I agree with everyone else, you should prioritize ESL classes.
Good luck!
@“aunt bea” :no need to be sorry :3
@goldencub Thank so much for your in put
Honestly don’t worry about W’s. I got accepted into UCI last year (things happened) and I have like a boatload of W’s on my transcript.
@Countchocula25 Thank you. It makes me feel easier
Just as an update, I ended up this semester with 3 Ws in one semester and maybe an A- in other class.
I’m still really worried about 3Ws in one semester. They are not my major classes ( math/computer science)
The Ws don’t matter. A lot of people on this forum have transferred with multiple Ws, including me (7 Ws).
Is there any different between impact and non impact major?
One positive about my situation that 3 Ws are in one semester, but I am still worried about them, also, at some point, getting a master degree does mater to me ( but it’s some where down the road)
UC’s literally do not care about W’s at all, so long as you complete all of the necessary requirements before you transfer.
W’s do not matter to the UC, to an extent however. I had friends get into the UC’s with a lot of W’s on their transcripts, but also think about the long run here. When you apply to graduate programs and vice versa, those W’s do matter.
@RAHforHEE 3 W’s from community college will not realistically hurt one’s chances for grad school. More than that, possibly, but even so, they can be explained.
Avoid getting W’s, but having some isn’t the end of the world. And if somebody knows that they only want a Bachelor’s degree, then it won’t matter for them if they pile on the W’s (other than wasted money).
