I know that colleges will not admit a student just because they play a sport, but as a rising senior, do you think it would look bad for me to quit soccer my senior year? Soccer is a winter sport in my state, so colleges will know if I quit or not based on my application/class schedule. Do you think it will look bad to only have done 3 years of a sport vs. 4?
It will look bad if you don’t have a reason to do so; if you are getting more heavily involved in another activity, it would be fine.
It’s rather odd for someone to quit a sport after 3 years unless there is an injury.
Yes, I think it would with no context. Not the fact of 3 vs. 4, but that you stopped what is likely an EC you were pretty invested in. Could come off as senioritis, or as someone who was just padding their resume all along. As mentioned above though, if it’s because you have other things you’re more passionate about (Model UN/volunteering/internship, not Netflix), I think that’s fine.
If the rest of your schedule is packed well, then don’t even worry.
It troubles me to see you posted a thread on lying about this topic. I realize you stated you would not do this, but then why ask the question in the first place? 3 years vs. 4 years of a high school sport in context of your entire profile is small. Don’t lose your integrity in this process, it’ll haunt you.
4 years vs. 3 years will not move the needle appreciably on your application.
Since you are not planning to continue with this sport in college, it will not affect your admissions. Colleges will view it as just another EC. Playing the sport for 3 years shows that you were committed to it - there is nothing wrong with stopping an EC if you lose interest.
Thank you. I will admit, the thought did cross my mind about lying about this topic. However, after reading replies to both threads, I have come to the conclusion that it is not worth it to lie. If I don’t like soccer anymore, I’ll just discontinue it, and take pride in the fact that I did it for 3 years.
