3 years vs. 4 years foreign languages

My son, a freshman, is taking spanish 1 this year. His spanish teacher recommend him spanish 3 honors for next year. Since the school only have 4 levels of spanish courses. This skipping of spanish 2 course will result in only 3 years foreign language for him in high school. Would this affects his college application, since most selective colleges and universities require 4 years in foreign languages. Any suggestions are appreciated.

it's what level you get to, not how many years you actually take. I'll only take 2, maybe 3 years (if they offer Spanish 5 AP Literature) of Spanish as I started in Spanisbh 3 Honors as a Freshman.

wzzzz...your fears are unfounded. In fact, adcons will look favorably upon skipping to a higher level Spanish because it shows that he has aptitude and skill in languages. In fact, I read a post on CC by this person named chaddyboy who took French 1, 2, and 3 all in one year!

Since there are only four levels of Spanish at your son's highschool, I recommend that your son take an advanced class in Spanish a community college during his senior year.

i took spanish i, spanish iv, and ap spanish and i've been selected for some fairly selective programs so far. don't worry. they'll be happy he didn't waste his time. just make sure he doesn't fill in the extra year with a class like "family dynamics."
