I am aware of the 3 year requirement of foreign language for all UC schools but does this apply to three years of the same language? As in Spanish 1, 2, and 3 or can it be a combination of say Spanish 1, French 1, French 2?

The reason I ask is because I took Spanish 1 in 10th grade but due to schedule conflicts with my AP classes, I was forced to take French 1 in 11th grade. Also if I were to transfer to UCLA from SMC, is the 3 years from High School a requirement to transfer or do I take 3 years of college foreign classes?

Ouch, that's quite a blow to me. Any idea if the 3 years of foreign language from High School is a requirement when transferring from SMC to UCLA? UCLA has always been my first choice. Infact, I remember well that my counselor had told me that it would not make a difference if I didn't take 3 years of the same language. Bummer.

my friend couldn't take french 3 because she had to choose between that and AP US. and she's now a junior here. so explain it, but don't worry about it.

Ah, well I was worrying because I thought that it was a definite requirement. As in one of those things where they just throw out your app if you don't meet the minimum requirement, which in this case is the foreign language requirement. Ironically, it was AP U.S. that I chose over the class as well.

you are required to take 2 years of language in high school (3 recommended). It will only count if the language courses are the same, meaning you cant mix it up.

I got in with 2 years of language. I did not mention it in my essay since it is not as important as other factors that might hurt my admission. Use your essay to write something more unique (which you probably turned in already).

don't worry too much if you didn't take 3 years of language. Try to be involved, and take more AP/honors courses.
