30,000+ apps for Stanford, Duke, Penn, Northwestern

For test takers in 2011, almost 60,000 scored 2100 or higher on the SAT and more than 25,000 scored 2200 or higher. And that’s just for single sittings, not superscored. So I guess it is likely that the majority of the 30,000 or more applying to elite colleges are highly qualified. Very sobering.

^And don’t forget that almost as many ACT tests are taken now as SATs. There is some overlap, of course, because some people take both. And not everyone who takes the test is applying to college, or going there. But it seems likely that the number of kids out there with the equivalent of 2200 SATs, superscored, is probably well above 40,000, and 100,000 at the 2100 level.

Meanwhile, a LOT more than 30,000 kids are applying to elite colleges. Believe it or not, comparatively few kids are applying to ALL of the elite colleges, and most of them are getting 30,000+ applications. But not all of the 40,000+ 2200-scorers are applying to elite colleges.

"There are literally hundreds of good colleges in this country begging for warm bodies (who can pay the bill). "

-As well as hundreds who express their love in many different ways to those very top caliber students who would be accepted to 4 UG’s in OP. They can pay, but they are offered full tuitions / full rides and are very happy to attend UG for free and take full advantages of all opportunities offerred to academic “stars” there in addition to great financial packages. The best jobs on campus, great research (or business) internships, many awards at graduation and great LOR’s that will make huge difference for the next step in their lives (just to mention a few).

Here’s some insight on the composition of the applicant pool to Northwestern last year. Pizzagirl says this was sent to her as an alum/local club leader. Note that these stats are for the overall applicant pool, not the admit pool.

UVa’s undergrad applications this year were 28,300, which was an 18% increase from last year. Part of the reason for the increase was a new early action program, which attracted 41% of the applications.
