30 points IB credit

"IB Diploma (2002 and later) 30 or higher:

[NONDEPT Unassigned]:

up to 30 units depending on credit from higher level exams."

Can somebody please explain the whole IB credits above 30 points on Diploma again? What are the advantages/disadvantages of having the credit?

Sorry if this has been answered before.

Thanks!

you get 30 elective units. IB credit does not pass you out of any requirements or GE's. however, there are 2 advantages:

if you have 30 units, and you take 15 your first quarter, then you'll have 45 units after your first quarter and thus qualify for "sophomore" standing in terms of units. that means you get to register for classes before the "freshmen."

you need 180 units to graduate. pretend you've already completed 150 from your major and everything else. instead of taking 30 more units of classes, you can use those 30 units of elective credit from the IB to finish off the final 30 units and thus graduate (early).
