I was just wondering if I should retake the ACT. I received a 33 (34 English, 35 Math, 28 Reading, 34 Science). The 28 in Reading really killed me. Is it worth it to retake the test and possibly earn a point or two higher, or is this score fine? Thanks!

Congratulations! The middle two quartiles of matriculating students (25% to 75%) have an ACT range of 29-34. Your 33 would place you most likely above the median of ADMITTED students.

That being said, it's only one slice of your overall presentation. Good luck with the rest -- your ACT scores are fine.

hey, awesome, where did you get the info on ACT range?

fast27: I have in front of me a glossy flyer from Yale, a general info sheet for admissions purposes that's handed out at college fairs. The scores breakdown is this:

For matriculants of the class of 2010, the middle two quartiles have this range:
SAT 690-790math & writing, 700-790 verbal
ACT 29-34

Also 95% ranked in top 10% of HS graduating class.

HTH

Would someone with a SAT of 680CR, 680W, 780M be an auto reject?..

jhl, are you trying to get into a competitve school?

Yeah I think it would probably be hard to.

I'm trying to get into a competitive school.. I mean.. My math score is in the top 25th percentile but reading score in the bottom 25th.. They can't balance out?

well if you apply your mathematical wisdom to the numbers I posted, you'll see that a full 25% of matriculants had below 690 writing and 700 verbal.

Of course it's not an automatic reject but only one component of your overall file. That being said, you should have an excellent transcript and other intangibles (recs, essays, ECs) to be viable. No one has a good chance based on the sheer volume of applicants but you need to leverage your other strengths b/c your test scores are in the lower end of the vastly competitive applicant pool. Good luck
