34 on the ACT first time without preparing, is it worth retaking? Thanks so much.

I took the ACT recently and made a 34.

English-35
Math-29
Reading-36
Science-36

If I reviewed the material for the math section would it be worth taking again?
I know a 34 is a good score, but would taking it again for a 35 or 36 increase my scholarships? I'm happy with my score, but I don't know ifa point or two would change things significantly.

Thank you SO much!

i was actually wondering the same exact thing. any help would be appreciated.

If you are aiming for competitive scholarships, I think you should take it again. However, you should be confident that you can do better. If not I don't think it's worth your time. But if you're not going for scholarships, then the 34 is good enough for even the most competitive schools.

Well, anything 32 or over is in the 99th percentile, so a 34 is great. You sure don't need to retake it.

However, at my D's school, a lot of kids got 33's and 34's and few got 35's. No 36's this year (just one last year).

Again, you definitely don't need to retake it.

But if you got a 34 with no preparing at all and it is fairly convenient to retake it, I would go ahead and retake it if you have time to review some practice math sections. You might end up with a 36, which is quite noteworthy. That's what I would advise my own kid. If there is an ACT date coming up that fits into your schedule, go for it.

If it's not convenient to retake it, don't give it a second thought. A 34 is a GREAT score.

lol, math is easy and if you can get that to be what ur other scores are then you can get a36 haha

I would normally NOT recommend taking this over....However, there are a number of schools who look at the math/reading/writing subscores of the ACT as admissions tools.....You could definitely bring up that math and if you can't, you don't even have to send the score......

I got a 33 first time no prep, then had to retake it for state testing and got a 34. It really didn't do anything extra for me.

Rodney makes a good point though in your case... Only if you're applying to highly selective schools though.

My D applied for the Best Buy scholarship and they asked for 1) your highest reading or writing ACT score and 2) your highest math ACT score

No, do not retake the ACT as a 34 is high enough to apply to any Ivy League school. To see if you can raise your math score, try the SAT IIs for math.

I'll trade you my 34 math for your other sections lol

ok thanks guys. I don't know why but math has always been hardest for me.

For some reason I got a 70 math on the PSAT and low on the SAT and ACT (comparatively.)

Thanks so much for the advice!

Lol I think theres way more to life than taking a test but that's just me

^who in the world would think that tests = life? haha =P ur not alone

ya to be honest what scholarship requires over a 34? I'm pretty certain 34 is fine. But I guess you can always meet new people in the testing room

If you want to go to the most competitive schools it would advantageous to retake since you can probably improve your math score with a little work and there IS a difference between 35/36s and 34s.

Did you take it with writing? If you took it without writing then you should take again with writing.

Believe me I do not want to take it again, but my parents were wondering if it would make a difference. The writing scores are not up yet but I hope I did as well as the SAT (11.)

Thank you all so much for your advice.

Retake it, it won't harm anything if you'll do worse. Usually people get a better score the second time anyway.

I scored a 34 cold last June with the only glitch being a 9 on the writing. Up until today I figured that was it for me, but just decided that there's no downside to retaking except the wasted morning. My cousin went from a 29 to a 35 between sittings. (She just found out about the 35. I need ask her what she did to prep....)

You could make the same case that your math ability has improved by taking the SAT Subject Test Math Level 2.
