34 to 36?

I’m planning to take the ACT again in September and maybe October in hopes of boosting my score. I have already taken it twice in October 2015 and April 2016. I have an excellent score right now in my opinion:

English: 35
Math: 34
Reading: 34 (35 in April 2016)
Science: 32 (31 in October 2015)

While, I’m content with my score I plan to major in BME or bioengineering and then maybe medicine. I plan to go for some highly selective schools including MIT, Cornell, and Hopkins just to name a few. I saw that some of these schools, require much higher scores, 36 math and definitely higher in science. I’m entering senior year this upcoming school year, and was wondering if anyone could provide tips and resources for practicing to boost my scores.

@vishmanx I am also going into senior year, and I am feeling the stress of college applications as well. My goal is Harvard, but we’ll see. I got a 36 composite on the ACT last October using the Barron’s ACT prep book. Not that a study book will dramatically improve your score, but it could help. I would suggest looking mostly at the math and science sections of the book, especially since your reading and English are already very good. There are a few good math tips in the book, and the science is all about reading the passages and understanding the content. You probably don’t need to work much on the other two sections, so just do as much math and science practice as you can. Don’t forget to time yourself! There are many other study books that I’m sure you would be just fine with too. For the science section my advice is to work fast. Skip anything you don’t immediately know because you only have 35 minutes, and each question is worth the same. Math is a little longer and not as daunting, and it starts out being very easy. I’ll tell you all the clichés too: take your time, check your work, and read carefully!

On the day of your test, your mental preparation is probably the most important thing for you. You already have a high score, but you really gotta be “in the zone” if you want to get a higher one. As lame as it sounds, I always curl my hair, wear my favorite jeans, drink Mountain Dew, and listen to super loud music before big tests like the ACT, but I can’t tell you how much it helps. Don’t be too relaxed because then you’ll make careless mistakes, just make sure you’re awake and alert. Wear your favorite shirt or have your favorite breakfast before you go, I swear it makes a difference. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope this helps!

Can’t edit now. But, one other thing I forgot. My writing score is also pretty terrible. Only got a 29. I don’t know if any Ivy Leagues or super selective schools (I.e. MIT) will even consider me. Any other way to get it up? My ECs are good, but not that good either. So, I need to get this up

@vishmanx Hi! So about your writing score…a 29 in the writing is actually in the 97th percentile. So that’s pretty good! People get very confused because they are comparing their writing score to their composite and individual sections, but they are completely separate. A 32 in the writing would be the 99th percentile, if you were wondering. Also, the ACT people have realized that there is so much confusion that they are changing it back to 2-12 scale. They are still grading the same way, but averaging the 4 domains to give the score out of 12. This change will be in affect for September.
