Hello everyone, it's my first time here and I have a question about whether or not I should retake my ACT. My composite score is a 34 with a 36 in the reading, science, and math sections but then only a 29 in English.

Will the fact that my other sections are all 36s then my English a 29 hurt me? I took the test with no prep and was still waking up during the English section, which is why I think I did poorly on it.

Would it be worth it to take it again and possibly get a lower score on the other three sections just to raise my English or is my score fine even with a 29 in it?

The universities I'm looking at applying to include UIUC, UMich-Ann Arbor, and UWisc-Madison.

Also my unweighted GPA is a 3.83 with the most rigorous course load possible in my school.

Could you secure acceptances from colleges on your application list with a composite 34 ACT score (including the 29 on English)?
Absolutely.

Would your chances of being accepted increase if you could raise your English and composite scores?
Possibly.

Could you obtain more merit-based financial aid with a higher composite score?
Yes.

Why not put your best foot forward during the application process?
If you think you can do better on the test, then retake it. On the off-chance that you earn a lower score on the test overall, it’s not a big deal. The vast majority of admissions committees consider only the highest ACT score from one sitting anyway. A few schools even “superscore” ACT scores from different test dates.

The English section on the ACT is arguably the most “teachable” of the 4 multiple-choice sections. It is certainly possible to prep for it. Good luck.
