3N CHOICES floor?

I was looking at the different housing options on the NYU website and fell in love with 3N, and the CHOICES floor interested me. The website describes it as "a substance-free floor, on which students commit to a lifestyle without substances," but I was just wondering what exactly that entailed? In my mind, it means no illegal substances, but don't all students have to sign an agreement to that (whether or not they actually intend to follow it) anyway? Or am I missing some other definition of "substances"?

My understanding of the CHOICES floor is that it is for kids who do not do drugs or drink alcohol as a lifestyle choice. These activities are not allowed in any of the dorms (although I am certain this does occur anyway) but CHOICES are for students who want to live with others who share their belief system about having fun without partying . My son was considering this floor but ending up applying to Goddard because he wanted a small community with a specific thread he was interested in. Goddard is also supposed to be less of a partying dorm that the typical freshman dorms

Smoking isn’t even allowed. You can’t come back to the room smelling like smoke. CHOICES also means that people cannot come back to the room intoxicated from drinking outside of the dorm.

So I’m of age, I turned 21 last year. If I were to sign up for a CHOICES floor, it means I could not smoke or have alcohol in my room, despite being 21. For freshmen dorms, I think it’s more a commitment to not go out and smoke marijuana or smoke cigarettes and drink and then come back to the room.

Don’t be fooled, ALL NYU residential halls have a policy of no drugs in the room, and only having alcohol if you are 21.

Residential Life takes CHOICES very, very seriously. So be wary of just signing up to get into a certain dorm.

i lived in third north. the RAs are extremely strict! i think even if you aren’t on a choices floor, you’ll still be fine. for the most part, i never had trouble with suitemates/roommates affecting me because they were drunk/high or whatever.
and if you are choosing choices just because you want to get 3N, you don’t have to. not many people put as #1
