4.0 at a top 50 school. Where do I stand?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the whole forum thing, so I apologize if I should have posted this somewhere else. I know its late in the game for fall 2011 transfer apps, but I'm just starting to realize that I'm having a GNARLY year at a prestigious state school and I think its in my best interest to explore some transfer opportunities. Here are some of my stats:

H.S. gpa: 3.7 uw, 4 APs
SAT: 1350 cr+m

College

First semester:
Orgo I: A
Calc I: A
humanities: A
frosh writing seminar: A

Second Semester (Midterm report)
Orgo II: A
Orgo lab (2 credit class at my school): A
Calc II: A
Intro to Anthropology: A
frosh writing seminar: A

College EC's
On campus ambulance corps- certified emt-b + crew chief
Frosh rowing- 2k: beast mode, 6k: ehhh
some other assorted shenanigans that has to do with a pre-med track and my major (biochem)

I decided to go to a state school for the typical financial perks, but now I think I've made a terrible mistake. Right now, I plan on applying to some ivies and top LAC's. Where do you guys think I stand in these transfer applicant pools?

I'll appreciate any insight. Thanks!

p.s. I’m a freshman

It could be a good shot but they are many applicants who have very similar stats. I believe you totally understand that you are qualified so the only thing we can tell you is to write stellar essays. In addition, if you really want to get out, you might think of some other schools, such as Emory, Rice and NW.

Premed – I dont see point of transferring, unless you were business, and wanted a school that had better recruiting. If you are happy, I would stay there. Save money for med school. Your school is good enough, your GPA and MCATs will be what matters.

@kayf I totally understand your rationale. That’s even why I chose to go to a state school in the first place. However, I know with serious conviction that my current school is not for me. I want to transfer because I’m straight up miserable here.

If you are straight up miserable, why don’t you just ask for a leave of absence for a semester/year, and do something else for a while? With your EMT skills, you are in a decent position to find a job that will pay you enough to live on. Then, spend that semester/year off identifying colleges and universities that are better matches for your personality, and that you will be able to afford. In the worst case, you will end up back where you are right now, but you will have taken the appropriate amount of time to find something better.

Alternately, why not plan to return this fall, but put some classes that aren’t such killers as O Chem in your schedule? I’ve taken that class myself, and uless things have changed in the last 30 years, O Chem alone is enough to account for 90% of your miserableness! If you have one or two un-dreadful courses in your schedule, your attitude might improve. Then you would be able to research transfer-to colleges without such a sense of desperation.

Wishing you all the best!

^Not sure that’s a good idea. If you’re miserable, transfer. You have the credentials to get into some top 25s so I don’t see why you shouldn’t apply.
