I'm currently a second year California community college student looking to transfer. My initial plan was to transfer after 2 years but due to some bad planning and procrastinating, I have completed zero math classes and am now planning on transferring in 3 years. Before my first semester, I did not prepare for the math placement test at my community college and did poorly as a result. I was not cleared to take a transferable math class and instead of taking a remedial non-transferable math class, I have been putting off math for a few semesters and taking all my other prerequisites instead. I intend to be a business major and have finished all the writing requirements, econ classes, business classes, and all other requirements. I have gotten A's in all of my classes and have completed nearly 50 units. I'd like to transfer to Berkeley or another prestigious business school but I know schools can be very strict about completing math prereqs. I'm currently self studying math in order to do better on the placement test. Although I haven't taken any college math classes, I have been studying diligently and know I can do well in a higher level math class. I want to complete Calc 1, Calc 2, and statistics. Is this doable over the this summer, next fall, and next spring? Also, are there any AP Tests I can take or something similar in order to make sure I complete my math prereqs in time? Thanks in advance!

You can study and retake your placement tests and try to place into Calc, that way you can take Calc 1 and stats at the same time. If you don’t place into Calc, you’ll have to take pre-calc. I’m not sure about taking any AP tests, but I doubt you could because it’s a high school thing. So look into retaking your placement tests and study up.

Go talk to your counselor. See what you can do. And watch it because some colleges have restrictions of how many hours you have to complete THERE after transferring. For instance my brother’s college requires you take the last 60 hours (or more) there to get a degree. You might end up with way too many hours than you need.

Thanks for the responses guys. I agree that I should definitely go talk to a counselor. Spring semester has already started so I’ll probably have to wait until the summer to take my first math class. I’ll have plenty of time to study for the placement test since I’m only taking 3 to 7 units this semester. I was debating taking no classes this semester but I decided to take a couple classes to keep myself busy. It stinks that math is the only thing keeping me from moving on but I know it’s important for me to learn it.

I also wanted to ask about what college would be good to transfer to. I’m considering Haas but I know it can be very competitive so I want to have other options. I’m open to other options besides UC schools. I’m leaning towards being a business major but it’s not set in stone. Also, since I’m only going to be taking one or two classes per semester, I’ll probably have a lot of free time for extracurriculars. I really don’t have anything on my resume besides my 4.0 GPA so I need to start being more active. I’m really bored right now so I need to find things to do regardless. Any suggestions?
