I’ve sort of fallen into a dilemma and need some advice. I’m currently finishing up my first year of community college with a 4.0 GPA with 6 completed courses. I’m considering withdrawing from 3 courses due to family and financial issues. One course I will withdraw from regardless. However, I currently have A’s in the other two. I really do not want these W’s on my transcript. Is there any other options other than getting these W’s? Are there any exceptions for students who are passing the courses especially with A’s? Considering my GPA, will these W’s really be that detrimental?
Is it really impossible for you to finish the other two? Seems wasteful to give up those A’s.
No, it really isn’t. I just wanted to know if there were other options especially for people who are getting A’s in the courses. If not, then I’ll most likely find a way to finish them.
Good luck, I hope you figure something out.
Thankyou. If anyone has experience…is it possible to petition these W’s? I just think it is a little ridiculous for someone with A’s in the courses to be classified as the same as someone with F’s… That’s just me. Again, I will most likely finish them up if there are no other options. Thank you for the advice.
Don’t expect cc to know college policy. Ask them. Don’t rely on anyone else for this information, please.
Isn’t the semester almost over? You have As in them, so just finish them out. I’m pretty sure that you would just get a regular W just like those who are flunking the course and drop out of it.
But like the poster above me said, ask your college and explain your situation to them, maybe they can help you or something.
Good luck either way!
Getting a W doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re classified the same as a person with an F. It just means that you withdrew from the class. There are reasons aside from poor academic performance for a person to withdraw from a class. If your school runs on the same approximate semester dates as most schools, then it means the spring semester is close to over. It’s only 5 more weeks until finals for me. It would be a bit of a waste of time and effort to drop them now, especially when you’re getting As in both of them. I’d definitely try to finish them if it’s at all possible.
You could petition to keep the W’s off of your transcript, but I don’t see it as too likely. You’d be withdrawing from the courses, which is exactly what a W represents. Some schools will offer an ‘incomplete’ which is a bit different. Although that’s going to vary from school to school. If you retake the courses next year, they may replace the W’s with your new grades. That’s the only likely solution aside from completing the classes.
Since you have A’s and its near the end of the semester I would recommend meeting your professors during office hours and talking about your situation. There are plenty of great professors that take family matters seriously. You might be able to work something out turning papers in though email and getting the remaining exams proctored. I would be willing to bet with your grades you could easily turn one of those classes into a pass/fail course and just show up ready for the final and still pass.
When my mom was air lifted to a hospital a few hours away (2 weeks into the semester) for a month ALL of my professors pretty much turned my classes into a distance education course letting me turn in work online. Don’t use that ‘W’ unless you absolutely have to!
If you’re planning to go to a UC, they do not care about Ws.
