For any current UD students, in looking online at the academic calendar , we see that UD is on a 4-1-4 schedule where you would have a fall semester until mid-December, then be off until the beginning of February. During that time is it required to take a class in the abbreviated January session? Can you advise how ending the Spring semester in late May impacts summer jobs, internships and other related matters? I see some internships we researched require availability 40 hours per week from May through August and it appears UD exams would not end for instance this year until 5/24.
Son is in UD Business School, and Honors.

I can answer your question on the Winter (January) session based on the responses I received from current students and parents. It is not required but can be helpful if the student wants to take a couple of classes to either get ahead or help with pursuing a minor or 2nd major. There are also study-abroad opportunities during this session.

You also have to pay additional tuitition and room/board fees for the Winter Session. It is totally separate from the Fall/Spring semesters. All the curriculums (all majors) at UD are designed so that a student does not have to attend any Winter/Summer sessions to graduate in 4 years. Reasons why a student might elect to attend the Winter Session were noted by the previous poster.

Ending in late May obviously could have an impact on Summer issues. How much is debatable. Jobs and internships which “mandate” starting before that would obviously not be accessible. I will say that several of my D’s friends were business majors and had no problem finding business internships (NYC and Philly) or jobs during the summer starting at a later date. UD has connections with many major corporations that have branches in many cities throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic areas at least, if not nationally. My perspective would be that if a student is diligent in trying to find such a position that ending later than many other colleges should not be a significant problem. Obviously you have to take the initiative to accomplish this. An internship/job is not likely to just fall into your lap. Best wishes to your son. He will get a great education at UD if he applies himself.

It may impact taking first session summer classes at local universities, for my D it prevented taking a summer course locally, this class was not offered 2nd summer session, although it was just one summer, the next year UD exams ended in time, (unfortunately it didn’t matter at that point) it was not an issue but she didn’t need to take one that summer.
Subsequent summers, D worked in research lab, was paid a 40 hr week. Her friends all from various majors all had local internships, jobs near UD and did not go home. Companies hired them knowing they didn’t end mid May, wasn’t an issue.
