I'm a sophomore and I'm thinking about taking 4 AP courses next year, my junior year:
AP Calculus
AP Biology
AP Chemistry
AP Psychology

All of my senior friends think that I'm crazy for taking these since my other courses aren't easy either (American/British Literature Honors, Religious Studies, Chinese Honors, band Honors, choir Honors)

Am I as crazy as my friends say? Any suggestions?

Well, considering this is College Confidential, probably not. We’re all in the same boat! And speaking of ‘crazy’, there’s a user on CC who’s taking 10 AP exams this year as a sophomore… :P

I think you could manage your workload if you’re prepared to work efficiently.

Yes. That wasn’t a typo. I think he’s self-studying for a fair amount of them, even though he takes like 5 AP courses at school… he already took 5 AP exams in his freshman year and got 5’s and 4’s on all. o.o

Keep in mind though, he’s an extreme case. As long as you’re taking the most rigorous course load available, I don’t think you should have anything to worry about. :)

Apparently I’ll be taking a course load even heavier than most of the seniors…But that’s not saying much… There are only 54 seniors in my school at the moment…

As a sophomore, no less! This was exactly the kind of reaction to his status when he posted that he was making his study plan for all 10 on Facebook. (lol, I added him as a friend) :P

It’s amazing how he’ll have taken more AP exams in his freshman and sophomore years than I’ll have in all four years of high school…

Honestly, I don’t think it’s that wise to take that many when you are only in your second year of high school. First, look at the whole point to AP exams. They are meant to supplement a college class and therefore take the place of said class when you go to college. Will you really remember anything from these classes when you go to college? No, I highly doubt it. Many of us on here probably could take 10 APs as a sophomore, but we don’t. Why? Because we would have seen it as pointless. Heck, I could take 10+ AP exams this year… but why in the world would I do that. Would I get a 4+ on all of them? Probably not. It’s just unwise.

I’m also taking 4 APs as a junior, which in my school is average lol. But I had to take into consideration that two honors classes (Spanish and Pre-Cal) that I will taking next year do give A LOT of work, especially Spanish, which I hear was brutal for juniors. Another thing I had to consider was the fact that I probably gonna end up self-studying vast majority of the material in those AP classes (because usually those classes don’t come close to finishing the material in time for the AP test.)

I am planning on self-studying for a 5th one, but my guidance counselor isn’t looking at that favorably. We’ll see what happens

@ OP, 2 or 3 of the 4 you listed are reletively easy. I’m refering to Calc (BC or AB…? but either is still very manageable) and AP Bio. I have heard Psych is easy and hard from people so that would be the third if it’s easy. Really the hardest class there is AP Chem. It is a very manageable schedual.

This is true. I say take whatever amount you can while keeping you sane. Personally, I took 5 AP classes junior year with 2 honors (I had to take the honors classes before I could take their equivalent APs). This year I took 6 AP classes which is… well, all of my classes except the required gym. However, I am taking 8 AP tests. So what I’m trying to say is, I know how it is. I know how the system works and what it takes to do A LOT of AP tests. I don’t see myself as being any superior to others taking 4 or less because really, maybe that’s as many as they could take or maybe if they took any more they would go insane. I respect that. Most kids come on here in hopes to gloat about their many AP tests or their wonderful academic achievements. So when you see a kid like “hey, I’m a sophomore, do you think taking 10 APs is a good idea” or “I’m a sophomore taking 10 APs, am I crazy?” it just gets very annoying because it’s just another person who wants to say how awesome they are. This isn’t directed at you OP, just a statement that doesn’t really pertain to what this thread is about… but hey, why not.
