Well, checked my ap scores online- only one I cared about was calc and, sure enough, I get a 4 w/ a 4 AB subscore :(

now, as Im in eecs, the red engineering book says that "it is recommended that students w/ a score of 3 or 4 contact a non-major advisor in the math dept." (a phone number is given).

now, Im just curious. Have you (or have you heard of anybody) talking to such an advisor and then enrolling in math 53 instead of 1B ? Personally, I do not quite understand how the process works. All I know is that Im fairly good in math, and REALLY don't want to take 1B.

any suggestions, stories, or help in general are greatly appreciated.

I think you have to get a 5. But I would recommend doing at least 1B because Berkeley's style of teaching may be different than your high school and the stuff they emphasize.

I recommend trying to skip out of it from what I heard about Math 1B's curve.

The College of Chem faculty told us at CalSO to make our decisions whether to take Math 1B or Math 53 based on how we think we will do rather than on our AP scores. I don't know about engineering though.

Engineering advisors will definitely get you into 53. It's mostly because EECS people have a lot of prereqs to take and they really need to save as much time as possible. Call the people.
