D has taken 3 years of honors Latin and is contemplating not taking the 4th year (AP Latin) to instead take AP Psychology. She believes she has gotten everything out of studying Latin that she was hoping to achieve and knows the AP class is primarily translating Virgil. She does not think that will be helpful to her nor interesting but curious if that will look bad on her transcript if she only completes 3 years of a foreign language. Thoughts?

Foreign language proficiency is a requirement for all AB students at Princeton. Based on this link [Frequently Asked Questions - Frequently Asked Questions - Class of 2016 Academic Guide](http://www.princeton.edu/pub/agf/faq/) point 3, it appears that advanced placement in language satisfies the foreign language requirement so it may be worth it for her to complete that fourth year of study. If she does not attain the required level of proficiency in Latin, she will be required to attain that proficiency in another language if admitted as an AB student.

For what it’s worth, I took AP Microeconomics instead of Spanish 4 and got in. Same thing for my sister, who took AP Physics instead of Spanish 4. At my school, however, both these courses are requirements to graduate (although we could have taken cp instead of ap, but that’s a different story). Psychology isn’t a requirement, but they would definitely be more lenient if psychology is your daughter’s intended field of study.

take AP Latin instead of AP Psych…AP Psych is such a joke. If the alternative was AP Physics or AP Microeconomics as benfster and benfster’s sister was faced with, then it might be fine opting out of AP Latin. But AP Psych? Lol people study AP Psych the day before the AP exam with a prep book and manage to pull a 4 or 5.

I had a similar question for admissions when I visited. I only had 3 years of regular Spanish (third year being this year). The foreign language is more of a recommendation. They just want to see that you take the hardest classes available. I don’t imagine that she will get docked for taking AP Psych over AP Latin.

My son had two semesters of community college Arabic for a total of three high school credits. (He had intended to take another semester but the class was impacted and he couldn’t get in) He was admitted to Princeton last year. Don’t stress. Let your D take what she wants.

Thanks for the feedback - good to know 3 years of the language is not a show stopper for admissions. She does want to take a different language in college and psych is more aligned with what she wants to study so think she will go that route. Thanks for the inputs!
