4 Years of a Language?

I was at my highschool's curriculum night and the prinicipal was talking about selecting courses. At our school, to get an advanced diploma, you have to take 3 years of a language. But, he reccomended taking 4 years of a language because he says colleges like to see that. Do you guys think that 3 years of a language is enough, or is my principal right, should I take 4 years of a language? What did you guys do? Do you think colleges won't accept me since I would have only taken 3 years of a language?

Colleges would still accept you if you only had taken 3 years of a language. Don’t forget to stick to the one language, during your high school career. I plan to go all the way to AP french. It looks better if you take 4 years than 3 years.

Bump…

My school requires four years of a language anyway.

It definitely looks better if you take 4 years because it shows dedication. 3 is the bare minimum; you want to show that you’re not the same as every other applicant.

Same at our D’s school:

Courses completed to satisfy this requirement shall include three years of one language or two years of two languages.

I think it’s fine if you just take three years of a language. I emailed a couple of colleges a few months ago and they all said three years of a language worked for them. Most colleges require three or less years of a language. Plus, this won’t be the only thing that colleges look at.

I plan on taking the equivalent 5 years of French (woot woot for block scheduling!), and then the equivalent of 4 years of German :)

azpandaman, you’re really good at languages!! Thanks for the input!!

My daughter has only been able to fit 3 years of French into high school, and I believe 3 years is enough for most, if not all, colleges. Daughter did skip French 3 and so is currently taking AP French. Would something like this be an option for you? I don’t see how a college could hold it against you if you end up taking the AP class.

I think it would be very hard to skip a level of spanish especially at the school I’m going to, but we can take 2 years of 2 different languages for a total of 4 years of a language.

I guess 3 years is enough, but languages are fascinating, why would you not want to take four years of one?

I wanted to take more electives and AP classes that interested me…

Bump…
